Kari, editorial cartoon 13.10.1959

Editorial cartoon done 20 years after the start of World War II : "20 years ago: -Damn, I wish I could go home; And now (at reunion dinner): -Damn, I wish I wouldn't have to go home!"
Kari Suomalainen (1920-1999) did editorial cartoons for almost fifty years and was a war veteran himself. It's interesting that in this war cartoon he has chosen to depict rather PLEASANT memories associated with the ordeal: much of it was also just young guys hanging out together. Also, it's noteworthy how much observation he has been able to put into his at first glance rather simplistic drawing: he has aged the characters a little bit (but not too much - a tricky thing to be able to pull off!) by showing them losing hair and gaining weight (and cleverly observing how that affects a person's posture).
