Description
Here's a bit of background on this piece... I've been working with JB selling his artwork for over 20 years now and I still recall my first visit to his place with Mike Zeck. Even back then it was sensory overload seeing all the cool stuff JB had displayed at home. As awesome as the artwork, toys, etc, were, one of the things that really stood out in my mind were the small, hand-sculpted, statues JB was making of some comic characters; even though he was not a traditional "hero", my favorite of these hand-sculpted pieces was Fin Fang Foom.

Fast forward 20+ years to a visit I made to JB's last summer; as I was picking out some artwork from the flat files in the back room in JB's studio/basement, I happened to look up and see the beloved Fin Fang Foom sculpture perched on some cardboard boxes on top of the flat files. JB was at his drawing board and I called out to him asking why Fin Fang Foom was in the back room rather than in the main studio with all of the other statues. JB replied that the hand-made Fin Fang Foom had been "demoted"! It turns out JB had gotten the large fancy-schmancy version of the character that Hero Clix released and the new version was on display in his studio. I asked if there was any chance he'd consider parting with the hand-made version and assured JB I'd give it a good home with a prominent display at my place. JB agreed to let the Finster relocate to Casa Warden and now he is perched atop my FIOS box in my entertainment room.

In late 2009 when making plans to visit JB and pick up some artwork, JB mentioned I was due for another commission, so I sent him this reply:

"I am thinking about requesting a piece with a honking big Fin Fang Foom... do you have any pieces featuring him percolating in the back of your mind that you've been looking for an excuse to draw?"

JB replied: "What did you have in mind? Avengers vs... kinda thing?"

My final correspondence on the piece was: " I am thinking of something along the lines of the Fantastic Four # 243 cover; with a BIG Fin Fang Foom and any characters fighting him being much smaller. Maybe set in a city or village with lots of rubble... Does this sound like something you'd have fun drawing?

JB said: "I always have fun drawing the Foomster!"

I figured JB already had something in mind, and it would be a lot cooler than anything I could describe, so I just asked him to add the piece to his list and this incredible illo is what he created! The original is done on 20" x 30" board.

You've probably noticed, but that drawing is a monster! Unbelievable. I'm stunned and my eyes are failing me because of it.

As someone who is not a Byrne fan, that is a really great piece of artwork.

How. The heck. Did I miss this AMAZING piece!! Fin Fang Foom is always fun, and this is an absolutely EPIC depiction! So much dynamic detail - you can just tell Byrne had a whale of a time creating this beauty. I have to say, I will revisit this masterpiece a lot - but my current favourite moment here is that hilariously shocked Colossus being smacked across the broken ground. Brilliant on so many levels.

There have been many, many great talents in the world of comic books over the years, and John Byrne has to be considered one of the greatest.  No, that is not hyperbole, because I'm caught up in the wonder of this tremendous piece right this moment.  He is a never-ending fountain of ideas and creativity and gloriously detailed drawing.  It just never stops.  And, each time you think he can't top the last masterpiece you saw from him...you see something like this, and are blown away again.

It's a wonderful world you live in, Jim.  You are so lucky to call friend, one of the greatest ever in the medium.
