To get an idea of just how important small details are, try this experiment. Study this painting carefully for a few minutes, then, reach up to your computer screen and cover the bullet hole on his head with the tip of your finger. It becomes a COMPLETELY different painting! I hesitate to call it an optical illusion, and I don't know if it was designed intentionally or not, but I discovered this completely by accident and it's always been one of my favorite things about this pariticular piece. But with or without the bullet hole, it's a beautiful watercolor and a powerfully, emotional scene. Enjoy!
