Karate Kid vs. White Tiger by Tom Grummett and Simon Gough

I believe that I first encountered Tom Grummett's artwork during his excellent run on New Titans. I then followed him onto Superman, Superboy, Robin, Power Company, Thunderbolts, and many, many other books. I love Tom's clean style and his excellent storytelling abilities. More recently, I enjoyed Tom's run on Avengers Academy. One of the characters he got to draw on that book is the most recent White Tiger: Ava Ayala. Now, I am a fan of every one of Marvel's White Tiger characters, from Hector Ayala to Kasper Cole, but I think that Ava may be my favorite. She has certainly explored the abilities of the jade tiger amulets more than any before her. Anyway, I thought that she would be a good match-up for Karate Kid and so I asked Tom to draw her for his opponent. And Tom knocked my socks off with this stunning piece! The characters themselves look incredible (put Tom on a Legion book!), and check out the inks on that rocky background! I really like the way that Tom drew Karate Kid's boots. This piece also shows how great an inker Tom is, and I wish that he would ink his own work more often. So yeah, I love this, and I want to thank Byron Hamm for setting it up, and of course Tom himself for drawing the heck out of it!

All of Ava Ayala's physical abilities have been enhanced to superhuman levels, and she is one heck of a martial artist. And depending on how her relationship with the tiger god is going on any given day, her power levels could be pretty extreme. That said, Val Armorr has never backed down from another martial artist, or a god for that matter. Ava will give Val a fight, that's for sure, but ultimately he's gonna show her that she still has a lot to learn in this crazy martial arts superhero world.

Tom's line has always been so elegant. So clean. And the way he draws musculature always impresses. This is incredible
