Description

"The Dead Draftees of Regiment Six!" by Michael Fleisher and Russell Carley. Eighth page of the 18-page story.

A stable hand wakes up shocked to find himself on a wagon of Civil War draftees headed to the front. He reassures himself that the army will let him go when they see he is disabled. He plans to take revenge on the man who tricked him into this!

How did he end up as a draftee? Earlier in the story a con artist, having received his draft notice, got the stable boy drunk to take his place at the conscription center. The Union's 1863 conscription act exempted those who paid a $300 fee or hired a substitute.

The abolitionist sister asks the con artist, masquerading as a leader in the movement to fleece supporters, where her brother is. She's shocked when the con man claims her brother accompanied him to the conscription center and suddenly decided to join up.
