DescriptionIn 1940 George Herriman painted four watercolors to be given away as a Christmas present. The recipients seem to have been three girls, probably sisters, who were either actual nieces of the artist or the children of some close friend who referred to Herriman as their "uncle." The watercolors were divided two to a frame and are still in their original mats and frames, as prepared by the artist in 1940. Herriman cut the heavy mats to size and added colored lines around the openings for each watercolor and along the outside perimeter of each of the two mats. He also framed each of the set ups in frames which he painted himself to complement the artwork. Such framed watercolors by Herriman are rather scarce, and I know of no other sets of framed pieces such as these. The frames themselves are in remarkably good condition for their age, with very little damage or fading. One of my friends began collecting "California watercolors" from the 20th century many decades after I had begun collecting 19th century British watercolors. I used to tease him (well, to some degree I was just teasing) that his new purchases were inferior to what could be bought in England for less money. The one time I held my tongue was when he showed up at my place with these Herriman watercolors. He had just gotten them from one of his California watercolor collecting friends. He sold them to me for bargain prices...I wonder what he would have charged if I had been more respectful of his watercolors in the past! Social/Sharing |

Lovely work and story. It's interesting to see how he built the frame and such to fit his art. You are lucky to own this work.
