New Mutants Annual 1 encapsulates everything I love about comics and The New Mutants. From an artist standpoint, we get McLeod (co-creater of the series) doing triple duty on his last interior pencil work on the title. I know Bob preferred to ink his own stuff, and this was the only issue outside of the Graphic Novel that he got to do that. There's a great mix of all the muties using their powers throughout the issue. On the story side, we get the first appearance debut of Lila Cheney, who would continue to pop up throughout the next 50 issues as Sam's girl. I miss this time of Annuals being true events - oversized stories that usually played a part in the larger continuity. This story takes place between New Mutants 21 & 22, so we get some great early Warlock, and Doug's first away mission. And the production process is what makes the art so special, IMO. Before everything went digital there were a variety of techniques for the 'special effects'. There are plenty of overlay pages in this book for Mirage's powers, Lila's teleportation, Magma's molten form... So in honor of the 40th anniversary of this book, I'll be posting all 40 pages over the next 40 days.
