During the 1950's... and even into the early 1970's... one out of every five comics sold was a romance comic. They were immensely popular, and hit by the same Comics Code restrictions that horror, crime and superhero comics were. Where early stories were actually pretty risque, the Comics Code devolved these books to mundane, "vanilla" stories ultimately leading to their extinction.
