Bubblegum Crisis started as an eight-episode direct-to-video animation and was one of the first anime series brought to the US home video market by Animeigo in 1991. I bought their VHS tapes, the laser discs, and the DVD's. This is one of my favorite action shows with its four women donning armored suits to become the Knight Sabres. Their mission is fighting the Genom Corp. and its "boomer" robots. The color guide for page 19 shows the girls getting into their hardsuits and page 21 shows off a dramatic pose just before going into action on pages 22, 23, and 24.
Kenichi Sonoda is the writer/artist of the Gunsmith Cats, Cannon God Exaxxion and Gunsmith Cats Burst manga, available in English from Dark Horse Comics. He loves girls, guns, cars, and the city of Chicago. These feature prominently in his Riding Bean anime, one of the early English-language videos licensed for US home video sales. For Bubblegum Crisis, Sonoda was character designer and contributed mechanical designs.
Adam Warren wrote and drew Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal for Dark Horse Comics. It was a real advance in his artistic development after two Dirty Pair miniseries. I met both Adam and Sonoda at Animerica in 1993. As I complimented Adam on the new work, he inclined his head towards Sonoda and said he was following a master.
