Description

When I came back from the International Manga Festival in Tokyo, I ended up taking home a bunch artwork and prints belonging to a friend who sells OA and commissions for some artists in the American comic book industry. Since he needed a bit of extra space and we don't live that far apart, the plan was that he visit my house and pick everything up at a later date. I had some extra space in my suitcase, so I said sure.

Anyway, among the items was a whole stack of drawings on large sheets of animation paper by Ryan Benjamin that were used for online emojis using DC characters on (I believe) Instagram. They were all done in pencil and those that were chosen to be part of the emoji set were inked and colored by computer. Normally, I wouldn't pay too much attention to this sort of thing, but, since they were at my house, I had plenty of time to thumb through them.

Among the group was this very finished drawing of so-called New 52 Superman & Batman, but they were smiling with their arms around each other in friendship like the old World's Finest Duo of my youth. For some reason, this drawing was not among the emojis that made it online, but, when my friend came over one weekend for a spaghetti lunch and to retrieve his art, I told him this one needed to stay at my house.

My friend not only agreed with me, but he suggested I scan the art and find a good inker who could finish the art properly. I will be looking into that sometime in the future. For now, I decided to give myself a nice but still fairly inexpensive early Christmas present.
