DescriptionHulk 230 was the "guest issue" with a completely different team assuming the writing and art, and took me by surprise as a relatively new comic reader. Why did they change everything? What happened to the previous story? Why was someone new drawing the pages? As it turns out, the ongoing Hulk arc jumped ship and carried over into the Captain America arc, presumably leaving the guests to fill in for Hulk 230. While I wasn't as happy with the new artist(s) on this issue, I felt the carried the artistic duties well and it was a fun story, with the recurring story returning with the following issue. Bob Layton's inks apear to be very strong over Jim Mooney's pencils (a guess as I don't know what the pencils look like) which appealed to me as I very much enjoyed Bob's inks over John Romita Jr's pencils in the Iron Man comics of the same period.Pages from this issue don't pop up often and I was just recently speaking with a friend and fellow collector about how long we had been looking for an example from this issue. I was fortunate to be the first to lay claim to this page in the recent CAF CON LIVE event. Thrilled to find a great example from this issue (one of the best IMHO). Please feel free to let me know if you are aware of another page from this issue as I would love to help my friend add an example to his collection as well. Huge thanks to PRC for an excellent transaction! Social/Sharing |

When will puny men learn that string can't hurt the Hulk? Cool images of the Hulk throughout!

Nice page, with three Hulk-size panels. And you're right, there is more Layton on this than Mooney. But that usually happens with Bob's inks.

Why....?
Why....?
How many times do I have to try to tell you
That the story arc to Cap has jumped, ooh. ooh, ooh
But when I start to try to read through
That's when you have Jim Mooney
Hulk... this farmer trouble's inked by Bob Layton
I told myself through angry lines
Why don't you ever learn to keep your thigh gap shut
That's why nets work so bad, used here absurd
Art CAF con's bringing to your house
Getting all Hulked out
Banner all Hulked out
Tell me
Why...?
Why...?

Wonderful page!! Really captures the whole "If they would just leave me alone, I wouldn't need to attack" vibe that brings such a poignancy to monsters like the Hulk.

This is such a great page Dave! Beautifully drawn by Mooney, great large panels, action, and some humor thrown in. Love it! Congrats.

Without even looking through the book, which I haven't flipped through in close to 20 years, I'd have to assume this is one of, if not THE best pages in this issue, and far better than the splash! Congrats on scoring it, Dave!

Thank you Rubén! And that means something as I believe you had the splash!

Gives me the Frankenstein's monster vs the villagers vibe. Classic Hulk imagery. That last panel is fantastic
