Lightning Lord by Gene Gonzales and Simon Gough

Mekt Ranzz was born on the planet Winath, where everyone born has a twin. But Mekt was born (seemingly) without a twin, and that was just the beginning of his problems. Jealous of his siblings, the twins Garth and Ayla, and believing himself to be a freak, Mekt became increasingly hostile. After gaining lightning powers along with his brother and sister, Mekt left Winath. Eventually he came under the influence of Cosmic King and joined the Legion of Super-Villains. After repeated defeats by his siblings, Mekt has only gotten crazier. But hope for Mekt's redemption does exist, as shown in the "Five Years Later" Legion timeline, where Mekt was eventually cured of his mental health problems and rejoined his family. I asked Gene Gonzales to draw Lighting Lord in his latest batch of "Conventionless Convention Sketches". Mekt looks like he's considering someone's fate as he powers up in Gene's drawing. I really dig the look on Mekt's face and the effects on his hands. And then Simon Gough added some colors and did a fantastic job, especially with the lighting effects. Once again, all my gratitude to Gene and Simon for going out of their ways to deliver excellent commissions!

Very striking image - Gene gets the Legion. Did you have the color added to the original?

Simon colors my commissions digitally and then he sends me a hi-res file that I can print out to keep with the original art.

Great job, I have been playing with Lightning Lord myself these days. He is a complex character.

Didn't Mekt talk in a really grandiose, almost Shakespearean manner when he was a villain? I mean, he had this tendency to sound very formal and haughty even when everyone else talked normally.

Not sure what you mean by "confuse", but it's his most recent costume that first appeared in 2008. I have reference for it at http://www.flickr.com/photos/doughnut42/16967074325/in/album-72157627632269732/
