DescriptionThis was a "must-have" piece for me in the February 2014 Heritage auction - I mean, how many times in your life do you get to pick up the cover to the VERY FIRST COMIC you ever bought as a collector? I mean, OK, technically, I bought Man-Thing vol. 2 #6 a few years earlier on a family road trip, but that was a one-off and, really, more like my parents buying it for me to keep me occupied!Later on, in 1983, a couple of my friends loaned me some of their comics to read, including Uncanny X-Men #172 and #173, which got me hooked on the X-Men and comics in general (Wolverine! Ninjas! Japan! What more could a young kid ask for in 1983??) Naturally, when I decided to take the plunge into collecting comics myself shortly thereafter, I went to the 7-11 to buy the current issue of Uncanny X-Men, which was #176. I still have that copy, with the newsstand UPC symbol in the lower left and the slightest of corner creases in the upper right hand corner. That's where it all started for me, and now, the cover is mine! It's just a hugely nostalgic and meaningful acquisition in a way that few other pieces in the hobby could ever be for me. So, so thrilled about this one! This was one of the 100 covers featured in The Art of Vintage Marvel collectible postcard set from 2007. Social/Sharing |

Congrats Gene on getting this highly sentimental piece-- a dynamic and memorable UXM cover in its own right!

This is a great 80's cover Gene. I can't get enough of JR/Jr's art from this time. It's where his style emerged. While the composition is full of the powerhouse dynamics we loved in superhero comics of the day The inks handled in a very delicate fashion & are gorgeous.

This is an absolute all-time favorite cover of mine. Purchased right off the newsstand in my youth. Not a stock piece or pin up turned cover that has absolutely nothing to do with the story. A time when continuity in comic book storytelling was important and the characters mattered. It wasn't about completing three or six issue story arcs so that a trade paperback could be manufactured for resale. I applaud your taste and ability to achieve your nostalgic goals.

Great cover. I didn't really ever read X-men and yet I still recall this cover. I enjoyed the backstory. My first comics were DD 200 and Alpha Flight #1 and my chances of ever owning either of those are so slim so congratulations on a personal milestone.

Awesome piece! Always loved this cover. Ironically, the X-Men Classic reprint of this issue was the first issue that I ever bought. I liked this version of the cover so much more that I actually went out a couple days later and tracked down an original copy of #176 and bought it as well, which is saying quite a bit about how cool the cover is since I was 10 at the time and that was a lot of money to me. :)

Awesome! A story about the cover that rivals the story inside the book!

Congratulations, Gene! It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings.

So incredibly happy for you Gene. Hearing that story, watching you follow through when the opportunity presented itself, these are the types of things that really renew and remind one of why we collect and what enjoy. Congratulations and enjoy it in good health.

It's pretty rare to be able to land such a nostalgic lynchpin piece to an art collection and at a fair price no less. Savor it. Very happy for you.

You can also count me among those who remember getting this issue off the stands back in the eighties. At the time Cyclops was my favorite character and I was thrilled he was given another solo issue. It's always momentous when a collector lands not just a nostalgic favorite but THE nostalgic favorite. Very happy for you, Gene!

While I've been a DC fan for most part (and most of my life), a few covers from Marvel always stuck in my mind and made me interested in what they had to offer. Your cover here, is certainly one of those images which seemed to stay with me. Great cover !

Hi Gene it was one of my first x-men comics also. From a time when i read the same comic more then one time......I still had the time for it and not the budget to buy as many as i can do now :-)
