DescriptionI fell in love with this brilliant Krazy Kat illustration back in 2012 when I saw it exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) here in New York City (I even took a photo at the time of the museum placard that accompanied the display - see the additional photos section). It was owned by J. Arthur Wood, Jr., who owned a 40,000 piece collection of cartoon art before he passed away in 2014.This piece, Krazy Kat and friends discussing Agathelan in Monument Valley, was a gift illustration that was hand-colored by Herriman himself. It was created for and given to the illustrator Henry Raleigh, featured in the book Krazy Kat: The Comic Art of George Herriman (on page 75), and was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (Feb. 19 to May 14, 2012) as part of the "Print/Out" exhibition, a review of which can be read here: New York Times Review of the "Print/Out" exhibition at MoMA A true "museum-quality" piece if there ever was one! I'm gonna click my heels together 3 times and repeat "there's nothing like museum quality".

Gene...what a stunning piece of art. Just drop dead gorgeous...no wonder you last saw it in a museum. Hope you're building one!

So wonderful in so many ways. The drawing is just superb, from a terrific period in Herriman's work. Then you have the tie-in with Henry Raleigh, one of the truly great illustrators. And then the tie-in with Art Wood, one of the truly great collectors, and an all around good guy. Many congrats, Gene!
