DescriptionThis page features a confrontation between Iron Fist and series nemesis Choshin, facing off and going mano a mano in a sweet looking homage to Mike Zeck's Captain America Annual #8 cover! This also happens to be the lead in page to the killer DPS I've already posted in this gallery. The art here is done in Perkins' usual method of pencils, inks, ink wash for the grey tones, whiteout/white paint & razor blade for special effects. For the newer collectors among us, this is what you would properly refer to as a "splash page with two inset panels", but....because the inset panels take up approx. one third of the page, calling it a "two thirds splash" is also accurate and acceptable. Fun Fact: Writer Ed Brisson and Perkins collaborated and came up with many fun names for the various martial arts strikes that were illustrated in this Iron Fist run and they wanted and intended to name one of them "The Zeck" as a tribute to Mike Zeck, but Marvel editors nixed that idea. A homage, but one that's distinctly Perkins. The level of care that he puts into each page is mind-boggling.

The two lead off, inset panels set up the big payday splash nicely! Powerful image!

I am not sure that I have seen a cover homage on an inside page before, but it works! Nice pick up!

Silent darkness creeps into your glow
Perkins brings light to Zeck's annual
The art that sparks this homage has no doors
Burnin' with anticipation
To see if there is more
Art's on fire
Strong desire
Pages that begin
Art's on fire
Fever's rising high
The moment of truth drawn here
Lines will not allow you to stand still, no
Shou-Lao breaks the heart and bends brush quills
And fights that have deep passions use your sword
Rules and regulations have no meaning anymore
Fist's on fire
Strong desire
Choshin with no-win
Art's on fire
Fever's rising high
The moment of truth drawn here

Impressive homage to one of the most memorable (Cap?) covers of all time.
And the one-two panels above are a nice way to set it up.

I saw the Zeck Cap cover in person not long ago and without hyperbole it's one of the best images of it's era. This pitch perfect homage by Perkins honors it while also turning up the intensity in it's own way!

Great page, which also poses the never to be truly answered question, what makes a splash a splash? I have a five sixths splash by John Bolton by the way. Lol.

Spectacular page! So bold, perfect composition, and I love the special effects. Faces and figures are super solid and in motion

Taste Dragon Chi, Choshin! Gorgeous splash, Rubén, homage or not. And I was wondering before I read your description, because I thought the style looked a little Zeck-ish, especially in the layout and faces. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. I have to keep an eye out for the right piece. And holy moly, that's a lot of process' He attacks the page like a surgeon. Another great one. Congrats!

Totally agree as far as terming it a splash! Love these kinds of pages with a big booming image and some storytelling panels before or after. Hear you've got the head shot lead ups, then POW! Great contast, as per usual with the crisp dark inks vs. the lighter ink wash. Sweet homage to one of my favorite covers of all time but also a GREAT piece of art in its own right! Congrats!
