DescriptionThere is something about the Sub-Mariner that always appealed to me. And IMHO, no one drew a better Namor than Gil Kane. Kane's mastery of human anatomy gave a kind of majesty to the Prince of Atlantis. Check out this cover for Sub-Mariner #50. Here, Namor has returned to his old home under Antarctica where he's attacked by a trio of Crab-Men! Notice how dynamically Kane draws Namor's physique! Meanwhile down below, encased under glass in a trance, is Namora, his cousin (In her first appearance since the Golden Age). That's a lot of elements to put into one cover, but Kane manages it easily. Kane's beautifully composed layout is enhanced and brought to life by the crisp, sharp inks of Vince Colletta. Just a dynamite cover from the Bronze Age.Social/Sharing |

When I was a kid collecting back issues, the first title that I made a goal of completing the entire run was Sub-Mariner. Love this character! So much so, that I was probably the only moron who thought the short-lived black costume was cool. LOL! Anyway, this one brings back a lot of great reading and collecting memories.

Bill, you have an amazing eye! I love this wonderfully drawn Namor cover -- especially those lobster creatures that he is fighting. Congrats!

Yet another superlative cover in your Gallery! It's from the seventies but it has also a lovely fifties vibe to it!

This is a wonderful cover -- one of my favorites of the run and one that is very special -- fantastic art all around. Great one.

Bill, another stunner. Marvel Bronze Age magic! Congrats on getting this beauty. Sub-Mariner was my second favorite Marvel superhero, second only to Captain America. Gil Kane’s Subby was definitely the best rendition of the character in my eyes too, with no disrespect to Bill Everett. Ps My frustration with Marvel is excruciating that they have still not jntroduced Sun-Mariner, their first superhero and the first mutant, into their Marvel movie universe. He is so way overdue to appear on the big screen. Here is what my dream introduction of Subby would be: in Dr Strange 2, which will begin production soon, Dr strange will seek the help of Subby who he will seek out. Then they will meet up with the Hulk who will help them fight the villain. This will lead into a “real” Defenders movie. And a stand alone Sub-Mariner movie. Then I can die and go to heaven.

Marvel would not quite be what it is today without Kane's covers as a legacy of a great era.

Very cool cover--I especially like that it's a full figure of Namor centrally placed grappling with villains. Congratulations!

Bill, Kane certainly was one of the all-time greats, and I have to credit Colletta for a surprisingly beautiful ink job!

It's small wonder Marvel let Gil Kane loose on all kinds of covers at that time: how could you not stop at the newsstand and grab a copy, eager to read the story! Congrats for a pefect pick!

Not usually a big fan of Vinnie, but he did a great job on Gil's pencils on this one!
