DescriptionFrank Miller's Sin City is a towering achievement. Miller's compelling use of blacks and whites was groundbreaking. Even now, paging through the comics, I am amazed by Miller's virtuosity. He pushed the envelope in terms of what comic art could look like. This drawing of Marv encapsulates his approach to the series. We see a bold silhouette, with sharp highlights where light hits the folds on Marv's raincoat, conveying a sense of movement. Marv's face is a stark contrast of whites and blacks displaying no actual features. His gun is a simple silhouette, with thin streaks of light representing gunfire. And the cross hanging from Marv's neck gleams brightly, as if signifying the purity of his cause. I love this illustration. It was used on the Slipcase cover of the TPB Sleeve Edition #1 and as the frontispiece in Vol. 6 of the TPB, Sin City: Booze, Broads, Bullets. It's pure Miller genius.Social/Sharing |

Gorgeous - there's lots of bad Sin CIty art work out there but this is the exception.

This is really a perfect encapsulation of Miller's high contrast black and white style, which really popped my eyeballs out when those books were first published. We've all become used to it at this point, but at the time I had never seen anything like it. Love it!
