DescriptionAlways loved the premise of this classic “What if?” cover. Penciled and inked by the incredible Michael Golden, it features all five of the original Avengers--Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, Giant-Man and the Wasp--standing over a pile of defeated Superheroes and Villains. Among those you can see are everyone from Spider-Man to Doctor Doom, the Thing, Daredevil, the Blob, Doc Ock, Sandman, Magneto, Mr. Fantastic, Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange, Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch, as well as the X-Men's Iceman, Angel and Cyclops...I might have missed a few. Michael Golden was a great choice to draw this cover considering he'd already demonstrated his talent for handling complex scenes with tons of characters during his stint on "Micronauts." IMHO, it's the quintessential Marvel "What If?" cover and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.Social/Sharing |

Golden has a magical way of including a lot of characters in a single panel, splash or cover and having them look natural and not crammed togegher. This is just another great example of that.

Looks like 2022 is shaping up to be a monster year for you buddy. You didn't just go out and get a vintage Golden Avengers cover, you got an Avengers cover that also includes half the Marvel universe on it. There's hardly room on this page for anyone else, but I'm sure if there was a wraparound cover with double the space and double the characters, you would have that too! Then again, it's only March, so maybe I spoke too soon! Ha!

I had never read this issue and I always wondered why the Avengers would defeat villains and superheroes alike? Seeing most of the Marvel universe on this cover was quite a sight to see!

I love the warning on the cover basically saying that the story inside doesn't live up to Golden's spectacular image. Sadly, the warning was true (in my humble opinion).

This is clearly one of the all-time best What If? covers ever published and a classic early career Golden cover with more characters than you can shake a stick at. It is not in the least surprising that it has made its way into your collection and I must say, it looks mighty fine here, Bill!

Well, What If, I guess Marvel would have had a lot less stories. Avenged. This is definitely my favorite What If cover. Fantastic layout by Golden, and I love that he used DDs old costume. Super sweet score. Congrats!

Amazing cover from an artist who understood how to make comics that were fun and dramatic!
From the moment I saw this cover, I used a glowing Altoid breath mint from my coat pocket to view over 14,000,605 possible futures, and out of millions of variable timelines, I found one single sequence of events that allowed me any chance of owning it myself. In this alternate future I engage the services of Michael Golden to draw a little rectangular art patch with Dr. Doom's legs and Sandman's shoulder, because there is no alternate timeline in the infinite multiverse where I've learned to accept that UPC box on Marvel's covers.
This spins off an additional 14,000,605 possible futures and, with a 1% margin of error, there are none of them where I survive being burned at the stake as a heretic by fellow comic art fans.
Congrats on another epic cover!

With the Hulk on the team, OF COURSE the Avengers defeat everybody. Talk about anticlimatic, forgone conclusion! This Golden cover it him in peak form, drawing his best work. Congrats - love this one!

There is something sui generis about Golden -- he seems to have sprung from some mysterious source, fully formed. This cover is magic and shows why he is still so revered. This cover also shows how Golden can create drama effortessly. A beautiful cover and a great addition to your amazing collection. Congratulations!

Gorgeous, classic piece, Bill! Golden's Hulk is the highlight for me here (WOW), and any opportunity to see his Iron Man and Doctor Strange is always special. An incredible assemblage of characters on this brilliant cover, Golden-style! Mega-congrats!
