DescriptionA page from the much-loved Frank Brunner run on Doctor Strange, this one from a Crusty Bunkers issue of Marvel Premiere. My brother, the artist and art historian David Roach, has identified the likely hand of Dick Giordano in several areas. Strange tricks Mordo, and then employs the Eye of Agamotto to reveal the sinister role of Cagliostro’s backstory to this adventure (who turns out to be 30th Century wizard, Sise-Neg – or ‘Genesis’, not so cunningly spelled backwards). Signed by Brunner at the bottom. I was fortunate to meet Frank at the 1979 U.K. Comic Art & Fantasy Convention in Birmingham, at the Hotel Metropole (Jim Steranko was the Guest of Honour). I was only 12 years old, and it was my first convention. I hadn’t realised that I should have brought some of my comics to be signed by the artists and writers attending. Without my Howard the Duck comics with me, I raced around the dealers to find something to buy, eventually finding a copy of Quack #1. I put it in front of Frank, and he looked at me a little sternly, uttering the words “Oh, another oddball, eh?”, which scared me a little (actually quite a lot). But he smiled and signed his Duckaneer strip for me. Then he chatted with me about Howard for a bit. Really great guy.Social/Sharing |

The content is hard to beat, and the crusty inks really stand out on this page (aside from the artist himself, Giordano was Brunner's best inker).

Woah Paul, what a great story. I was there too at this Birmingham Comicon in 1979 with a friend. We met Frank Brunner, Steve Leialoha and Jim Steranko too. We probably crossed our path in these alleys. What a great memory !
Anyway this Marvel Premiere page is a true gem. I absolutely loved these books inked by Neal and the gang. Congratulations !
