Description

The latest entry into my Tom Grummett Superboy cover collection sees Connor Kent on the cobblestone streets of Paris, fighting off the fiery flames of Grokk, side by side with The Guardian, just a couple of blocks away from the famed Eiffel Tower!

Living in Montreal, there is a small section of my city known as "Old Montreal", where the buildings and cobblestone streets have never been replaced and which therefore makes one feel as though they are in Europe. It is also referred to by some as "Hollywood North", due to the vast amount of American film and television production that occurs there, as a way to shoot scenes set in various European cities but without actually having to fly all the production across the Atlantic. So naturally, the setting of this cover scene also gives me that "close to home" feel.

I love Grummett's decision to tilt the camera to the right, as it makes for a far more dramatic and interesting composition. His figure work is as natural and loose as ever and I also love that he has always understood how fabric moves within the context of movement and gravity. In combination with Kesel's superb, complimentary inking, textures are wonderfully realistic, as the cobblestone looks and feels like cobblestone, the leather jacket looks and feels like leather and the wrought-iron of the Eiffel Tower looks, feels and has the solidity and weight of wrought-iron. Notice too, as Bob already has in his comment below, how Grummett doesn't skimp on the details of the tiny background figures, which he would be perfectly in his right to do, given how obscured they end up on the published comic book.

This is a wonderful cover example displaying all the hallmarks of what makes Grummett one of the best all around draftsmen in the industry and I'm happy to share it!

Great cover Ruben. I love the detail that Grummet draws into the small figures on the page.

The cover to the FIRST APPEARANCE of HEX issue!  Hidden all these years!  I knew it would pop up somewhere one of these days and here it is!

Oh My Lord! Havoc in the streets of Paris!  Grummett is at the top of his game with those clean Kessel inks to bring the heat!  The action is crisp and all consuming!  They knew there was going to be effects and blurbs on this one, so they put their signature where they knew it wouldn't get obscured.

Yes, I knew the day would come when I would unleash this beast to a waiting world, but in fear of all the possible deaths by heart attack that I knew could very well occur due to the shock of finally getting to see the cover to this key 1st appearance, I very considerately chose to not even mention it in my description. I believe I've saved lives here today, and for that alone, I'm very pleased, grateful and gosh darn it, proud of myself. 🙂

It's taken for granted that you don't need to mention anything with your stylin' and profilin', limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin' n' dealin', Rolex wearin', hot bars writin', First Appearance drip.

WTF?!? 😂😆 😅

Normally I'd be opposed to anything related to pro acting, uh, I mean "wrestling". But this is too funny so I'll allow it!

Is it just me that's sad that Grokk doesn't wear purple underwear?

Wow!  This one definitely goes to the top of my list of favorite Ruben pieces.  All the pluses you mentioned are exactly right, from the cobblestones to the jacket leather to the tilted angle to the detail on the onlookers.  The Guardian is one of my favorite supporting characters too, and that huge flame of fire is fantastic.  Love the colors on the published cover too.  Yee-HAW, that's one epic cover!!!

It really makes me happy to see you're the 4th person to mention they liked Guardian too! But if you're a big fan of the character, then you must've not seen me post this:

Whoops, did I hit you with that flamethrower? My bad...I love covers where the artist puts you in the action. Grummett is especially good at this. What's more eye grabbing than a cover truly in the viewer's perspective? Grummett Superboy covers are usually brilliant, imo. And setting the street scene at the edges of the fire was solid work. Another great cover! Congrats!

I dig the perspective choice on this! Really lends to some nice depth and the movement of that fire towards the duo. I also like the Guardian's calmer expression, like "Fire? Big deal. Ain't no thang with THIS shield" :) Congrats, Ruben!

"Famed" Eiffel Tower...?  More like FLAMED Eiffel Tower... or it would be if not for The Guardian and Superboy!!  A great cover here, Ruben (as you know), full of wonderfully rendered superheroics and drama.  I love how the flame stream is all negative space, and how the lush detail of the backgrounds really throws it into sharp relief.  And although that background detail wasn't served terribly well by the published colors, boy, that flame trail sure pops!  I love the cool composure while (literally) under fire by The Guardian here, and love the story about your Montreal cobblestones.  :)  Great piece!  Congrats, Ruben
