DescriptionPublished in 2005. The fourth volume in a series of trade paperbacks collecting the 1986 post-Crisis Superman reboot. Volume 4 collected SUPERMAN #7-8, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #430-431, ACTION COMICS #590-591, and LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #37-38. In addition to the Man of Steel himself, the cover features Rampage, Superboy and Krypto, Brainiac 5, a Chemo/Superman hybrid and Mammoth from the Fearsome Five.I’m thrilled to have this in my collection, as Jerry Ordway is easily one of my all-time favorite comic book artists. I started reading the Superman books in 1989, so Ordway and Dan Jurgens will always be the definitive Superman artists in my mind. The issues collected in this volume include the infamous death of Superboy story that crossed over with the Legion of Super-Heroes. I could probably write a long essay on my feelings about that story, but I won’t bore you with that here. I will mention that it took me five years to track down a copy of the actual death issue - Legion of Super-Heroes #38 - before I finally obtained a copy at a small comic show in 1994. Obtaining back issues could be quite the challenge in those pre-internet (and for me pre-driver’s license) days. Social/Sharing |

Was just rereading this TPB recently. I grew up with Swan but this era was really golden for me, particularly what Ordway would do with the character. As much as I liked how Byrne and Wolfman handled the relaunch, Ordway's art and stories were really what renewed my interest in the character. Great addition.

Classic Supes shot with bouncing bullets and crunching guns! Awesome. And that image below is suh-weet, too - 2 splashy shots for the price of one! Well, not sure on the price, but 2 def splashy shots! :) Congrats, man!

A comic art find
Of trade paper backing
They left before the Son Krypton that day
An exit to eternal issues buying
But where were they going without cover drawing Orway?
We drank up the lines
Of alleyway shooting
They now had more important bricks Rampage
And with the art breakdowns
He started inking
Where were they going without cover drawing Ordway?
Anyone can see the art of original has great Krypto
And it's always Super
When Brainiac shows
They'll never get hungry
Inks never get old and fade
You can see the Chemo wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But the Mammoth don't care
They wanted the art page
It’s happier here today, Ordway

Now I'm upset that when I saw Fastball in concert a few years ago, they didn't sing these lyrics. If they come to my area again, I'll slip them an extra $50 to use these.

I always wondered, "Why do these criminals even shoot Superman? They know by now." But really, if he showed up in front of you, you know it's over. You might as well take a few pop shots for entertainment purposes to see the bullets bounce.

Exactly. And maybe Supes was exposed to Kryptonite or a wizard's weakening spell that morning that made him a little less bulletproof. You'll never know unless you get off a few shots!

Ordway is one fo the all-time greatest comic book artists and this is a great Superman example. Nice montage, as it only had 2 scenes and allows for the main scene to still take priority! Great acquisition, Michael!

There's a real classic appeal to Ordway, wish he'd been more of a Marvel guy!

I also would have loved to have seen Ordway do more Marvel work. The fill-in issues of the Avengers that he did during the Busiek/Perez run showed he could bring a classic Buscema-like feel to the book, and his brief stint on the Fantastic Four inking Byrne (and then doing pencils as well) should demonstrate to any editor that he'd be great doing the FF today.

Mohawks were definitely a thing in 1980s comics!

Well done, Michael as this is just plain gorgeous and a prime example of Ordway's work on the character. I must confess that as a teen, I found his work to be boring but much like other quiet (as in not stylistically flashy) artists and true storytellers, I can't get enough of his work nowadays.

It's funny how our tastes change as we get older and more mature. I have a list of artists who I didn't fully appreciate when I was young but who I tremendously admire now (Mignola is at the top of my personal list). I guess it's better that we come to our senses late rather than never!

FANTASTIC add, Michael! How cool is it when a nostalgic favorite actually -does- remain awesome with the passage of time? :) Love the flared out cape at the top there (you just know that the logo is going to seriously pop there, and the "split cover" display of characters at the bottom (LOVE the Supes/Chemo combo) looks terrific. Congrats, Michael - this is awesome!

Wow! Fantastic Jerry Ordway cover to Superman TPB! I love Ordway's depiction of Superman as he corners a couple of thugs who make the mistake of emptying their guns at him. IMHO, Superman has never looked better. Love all the detail Ordway included on this cover, from the extensive brickwork to the garbage spilling out of the garbage bin. Fun additional figures at the bottom like Rampage, Superboy and Krypto, and Brainiac 5. Ordway really put a lot of effort into this cover and it shows. Great pick-up, congrats!

It is not. But the character is from the mid-1980s, and to look at the comic books of that time, you'd think women everywhere had mohawks.

Kryto, Brainiac, and girls with Mohawks. Ordway checks all the boxes.
