DescriptionHere's a fantastic early Spy vs. Spy 1-pager by Antonio Prohias! I was offered this art at a show back in the 2010s and always regretted passing on it as I was a big fan of Mad Magazine and loved Spy vs. Spy when I was a kid. When it turned up on the auction block years later, I was not going to let it get away a second time! It is one of Prohias' typically lively episodes, centering upon a booby-trapped bridge.Prohias was Cuba's preeminent editorialist in the 1940s and 1950s and had resettled in the U.S. in 1960 after Fidel Castro had accused him of working for the C.I.A. Prohias' new berth at Mad, the outwardly frivolous humor magazine, might have seemed out-of-character for so ferocious a political cartoonist, but he proved a fit with the "Spy vs. Spy" serial - a chronicle of the laughable futility of hostile intrigues. Not to mention that MAD gave Prohias a more widespread readership than he had ever known at El Mundo, Cuba's most influential newspaper. Social/Sharing |

Spy vs. Spy was one of Mad's most memorable serials, and this is a great example!

Great example. It is fun and has all of Prohias's inventiveness. It seems to me he spent a lot of time on panel layout and the use of symmetry and mimicry to great interesting visuals. It wasn't until I got an example that I figured out that the symbols at the bottom of the first panel is his signature in morse code...perfect for spies.

These have only become harder to find over the years with the universal appeal of Prohias' wordless gags that still reads with timeless humor for any generation.

Fantastic Spy vs. Spy page! As a kid, I loved Antonio Prohias' Spy vs Spy ih Mad Magazine simoly because I thought it was funny. Now, as an adult, I enjoy it in a whole different way. The elegant simolicity of Prohias' art, the beauty of his layouts and the subtle irony of his sense of humor were things I didn't fully appreciate as a kid. But I sure do today. Fantastic pick-up, Gene!
