Description

Cover dated February 2000.

December 31, 1999. The world celebrated as the changing of the calendar to 2000 gave people hope for what the future would bring. But disaster struck. The alien intelligence, Brainiac 13, attacked Metropolis and the world. When all seemed lost, a hero arose from humanity to save humanity. Lex Luthor, a shining example of the best of the human race, defeated the alien menace and gifted his city technological marvels that transformed Metropolis into a true city of the future. When the Martian failed, and the wielder of the Oan ring failed, and the Kryptonian FAILED, Luthor rose to the challenge. He proved that we don’t need to rely on extraterrestrial powers to protect us. If anything, those outside forces have been holding us back from our true greatness. When we rely on ourselves, humans can accomplish anything. We just need to trust in ourselves. And trust in Lex Luthor.

Brought to you by Lex 2000.

I'm no fan of the "villain suddenly turned hero" trope in comic books or elsewhere, but damn, I sure am a Guice fan!

Don't worry, Luthor was as evil as ever, actually trading his baby daughter to Brainiac 13 in exchange for keeping the futuristic technology that B-13 had infused into Metropolis.  They left that out of the campaign literature when Lex ran for President a short while later.

Ah, well then I guess it doesn't matter that I wasn't around back then, since the promo they DID include would have made me leave it on the shelves anyway! Come to think about it, I may still have bought it because Guice drew it....

Guice uses all the tricks in the book to make Lex a hero in this definitive piece that's enough get him elected as president in some places.  Showing his love of babies and guns!  His head bald as proud as a bald eagle!  Women at his feet looking up in admiration!  He's got money and dresses nice, so he must be smart.  A hero of mankind emerges from the rubble.  Do you not believe yet?

IMO Guice take on Luthor was always among the very best (hair or no hair). Fantastic piece !

Yeah, nobody drew the hairy "Lex Luthor, Jr." better than Guice!

As I had not read this story, when I  read your description, I brieffly though you had gone insane. Lex, a hero???? Then I twigged it after reading the comments. What a relief! Beautiful artwork .

This storyline led directly to Lex Luthor running for President of the United States (and winning) in the Superman books back in 2000, because the world perceived him as a hero (and a tragic hero at that given that they knew Lex lost his daughter but didn't know his role in what happened to her  (spoiler - Superman saved her later down the line)).  The Superman books were on the upswing in terms of quality in 2000 with writing by Joe Kelly, Mark Schultz, Jeph Loeb and J.M. DeMatteis, and part of the fun was Superman being helpless to stop Lex's rise to political power.

The Bald Baddie sure looks heroic here - is this Bizarro world? Striking page - congrats and thanks for sharing!

I don't think he cares for the moniker, but I'll always think of him as "Butch".  To be safe, I'll just stick to Mr. Guice!  Four decades in the industry and he's still doing outstanding work.    Great cover!

Yeah, I previously labeled my Guice pages either "Jackson" or "Butch" based on how it appeared in that issue's credit box, but then I made a judgment call to just label everything "Jackson".  Maybe use both names instead to cover all the bases?  Either way, he's been one of the best artists working in the field for 40 years now.

This is one of my favorite images of Lex Luthor.  Guice is a genius.  This page is expressive, dyamic and just flat-out awesome.  Congratulations!

Always great stuff from Guice, even the villainous "hero" Lex, congrats!
