DescriptionWhen I first contacted Fred Hembeck about my crazy idea to cast the Fantastic Four as characters from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" he took his time responding as he had to "mull this one over a bit."But, after taping and watching the 1935 film version off of Turner Classics to "get in the mood" (you have not lived until you have seen Mickey Rooney as Puck – oh, and James Cagney had a grand old time playing Bottom, the Weaver), he got his pencil and brush going and, well, I have to say that the results are inspiring. He absolutely captures the broad comedy that often gets missed in many a more "earnest" production. Just so you know (try to stay with me here), Mr. Fantastic is Oberon, King of the Fairies and The Human Torch is Oberon's minion, Puck or Robin Goodfellow (that merry wanderer of the night), who have secretly given Titania, Queen of the Fairies (played here by The Invisible Woman), a potion that will cause her to fall in love with the witless actor, Bottom (played here by the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing), whose head has been magically transformed into an ass. In the background, it appears that Mr. Hembeck has also added a cadre of little fairies who all look suspiciously like the Thinker's Amazing Android. (And hey, I don't even have to include the dialogue in the description for this one because Mr. Hembeck already added it!) PS Tim sez: Oops! Fred sez: One correction: those fairies are actually the Mole Man's moloids, not the (much larger) awesome Android!! Just so you know!! Social/Sharing |

I'm glad to see commissions by Fred that leverage his wit and creativity. The single character drawings and cover recreations are good, but the original work is just so much better. Great pickup!

Weird...in a good way! I'm pretty sure no one will ever duplicate this request for Hembeck!

A commendable theme for a series of commissions! I tip my English Major's cap to you, sir! And my favorite Shakespeare comedy, to boot! (Now you've got me thinking... Doctor Doom as Richard III... Alpha Flight in the Winter's Tale... Thor as Henry V (along with Volstagg as Falstaff)... Doctor Fate in The Tempest... )

Such an interesting theme for a commission project, and Hembeck truly delivered here. Great piece.
