DescriptionWhile this issue is fondly remembered by me as the book that finally gave Baron Karza his richly-deserved Dirt Nap, from an artistic viewpoint I'd always thought the cover a little awkward. It wasn't until seeing the OA that some of those concerns were answered: there had been some significant Editorial changes.Obviously, there were stat changes to the book's logo. Compare to the published cover. Rann's holding of the Baron's dead helmet (head?) was apparently a late addition; his original stance had his left arm positioned similarly to his right, almost in a Hulk-style stance. Moving the arm up reveals how oddly Rann's hips are composed in this piece. Have you ever tried to stand with your feet well outside your shoulders? All this poking might suggest I dislike the cover, nothing could be further from the truth! But the Art Student in me still can't help note anatomical and compositional irregularities, which the (then) rookie penciller Guice could still occasionally burp up. Social/Sharing |

Great get for a Baron Karza fan! Part of art is critiquing and that and enjoying the piece definitely aren't mutually exclusive! Congrats!

Yep, the stance is odd and the head looks smallish BUT it is a wonderful cover and Guice grew over time to be the tremendous illustrator that he is today. And, by the way, I love the the layout and agree that this is very cool if a bit difficult to actually stand that way!!!

It looks more like Baron Karza took iff his helmet- revealing he was Rann all along- and the others are ashamed they fell for it!
