DescriptionI’m sure that for many years after these stories were published, the Avengers/Defenders saga was understood as being just Defenders #9-11 and Avengers #116-118. By the time the trade paperback reprints came out, the skirmish became a ‘war’ and took in Defenders #8 and Avengers #115. Both of those issues contain back-story, so I guess it’s fair to include them.Here, Doctor Strange has examined the Black Knight statue (rescued from Garrett Castle back in Defenders #4) and has made contact with the ‘spirit’ of the Knight, who is trapped in some timeless realm. The Black Knight responds that he does not know how he might be freed, but Dormammu and Loki alter the message so that Strange believes that the Evil Eye is required to achieve this. Summoning the Defenders to aid him in locating the 6 parts of the Eye, he is disappointed to find that the Sub-Mariner and Valkyrie do not answer. Unbeknown to him, they, along with new (temporary) Defender Hawkeye, are being brainwashed by the Red Ghost to defeat the Atlanteans and install Attuma on the thrown of the underwater realm. “Crom” indeed! Sal’s storytelling is just fantastic, and the initial scene inside the Sanctum Sanctorum is wonderful – the concerned Strange, the unconcerned Surfer and the completely disengaged Hulk. It’s a wonder that Doctor Strange could ever cajole the Defenders into doing anything at all. Social/Sharing |
