DescriptionGreat to see the late Canadian artist Gene Day (1951-1982) finally get some hobby love among comic art collectors, with records being smashed at auction this year for an original cover, splash and interior pages by the artist.Day was best known for his work on Marvel's Master of Kung Fu series, where he inked series penciller Mike Zeck starting with issue #76, while taking over the art duties himself from issues #102-120 after having split the work with Zeck on the double-sized issue #100. Day also inked Carmine Infantino on Marvel's Star Wars series and was both a mentor to and collaborated with Cerebus creator and fellow Canadian artist Dave Sim. Day was slated to take over DC's Detective Comics when he passed away suddenly from a massive coronary in 1982, aged just 31. Comic art aficionados are finally starting to appreciate Day's incredibly bold artistic vision. His compositions and panel layouts were unique and innovative, and he gave every page his all, even on a non-marquee title like Master of Kung Fu which was flirting with series cancellation. I love this incredible double-page splash from issue #116 - shades of Steranko the way he marries art & text, with an M.C. Escher-esque vibe from all the interlocking staircases! Some incredible perspectives and detail work on this one, a great example of the late master's work on the series. I would highly recommend this recent Gene Day Art Appreciation video from @cartoonist.kayfabe on YouTube for more information on Gene Day's fantastic, but short-lived, tenure on Master of Kung Fu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An2cMmxAOyo Link to my hobby-focused (~75% trading cards, ~25% comics/comic art & other) Instagram account: collections_gp Instagram account Social/Sharing |

Whoever uses the name "Gene Day" without the word "master" isn't paying attention.

Wow, this is great - I am ignorant of his work. (Often saw the name; didn't really clock it.) This is fantastic - and the Steranko/Escher references are dead on. I'd add that he seems to also know his history, as there's some Eisnerspritz in there as well. Really satisfying - you could stare at this for hours.

Really ahead of his time when it came to bringing these design elements to his work, particularly his MOKF title splashes - case in point. Just some outstanding crazy goodness. Super impressive to conceive then execute. Congrats!

A couple of thoughts: 1. Roger Clark was WAY ahead of the curve on Day. 2. I also thought he might be the last true aficionado of this art.
Fantastic to see that's not the case and that Day's work lives on with new fans! Thanks to you, Kayfabe, and others for the Day MOKF renaissance! And needless to say...amazing example!

A little bit of Eisner and a bit of Steranko in design with plenty room left for his own artisitc inking style to bring this to life. It may be stairs, but they look like waterfalls around those bricks.

This DPS must have required lots of planning and layout. The result is stunning.

I wasn't a MOKFU reader back in the day, but I was very tempted to pursue when I saw this available. Fantastic piece to get lost in. Big congrats Gene.

OMG! Mindblowing DPS from the legendary Gene Day! Check out this layout that uses an Esher-inspired stone staircase to tell the story of Shang-Chi's life in his father's fortress. The design of this double page splash is nothing short of amazing!

This is a tour de force example of Gene Day. Cinematic, Escher, and KungFu. This is why Gene Day is great. You can start anywhere in this piece and your eye gets pulled in so many directions. BEAUTIFUL.
