DescriptionI've provided some background information on Mort Cinder, Alberto Breccia, and Hector German Oesterheld's graphic storytelling triumph in the 'Charlie's Mother' description in this same gallery.This story starts very abruptly after the conclusion of the previous story, ‘The Tower of Babel.’ Mort’s in a prison yard, and we’re given no context. But he’s counseling a fellow prisoner who’s about to break under continuing pressure from an abusive guard not to kill him. They are both in a Blue Dove, Oklahoma prison in 1925. It’s the first of two stories set in the penitentiary – the second one being entitled ‘In the Penitentiary: Friar’. In Marlin, the character of the same name (Stanislas Marlin) Is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given a month to live. His fellow inmates help him stage a breakout. Social/Sharing |

Some German Expressionism influences to my eye, either directly or via Krigstein maybe? Looks awesome in any case!

Artistically, this is my favorite Mort Cinder chapter with the contrast of the prison uniform stripes put to great effect. It is so well handled I see it as a challenge to all artists to match his skill which I'd argue none have risen to that feat yet. .

Mort Cinder is one of the best and most influential comics ever created. Never tired to look at these beauties. You have a Great taste!

Also of note: the two prison stories contain AB's only use of zipatone in Mort Cinder (and all of his work, if I'm not mistaken). I love that he approached every project or story with a new set of aesthetic criteria to match the content. Great, boundary-breaking stuff - congrats again on your Mort haul :)
