Ted Latner said:
The Gumps was a great strip which was incredibly popular, but sadly mostly forgotten now. Sidney Smith was killed in a car crash in 1935 after signing a record breaking contract -- 150K / year, which was a huge amount at that time! ![]() I didn't know that -- sad! Thanks for the information. |

Marcus Wai said:
There's nothing more in the world that Hap wants than to take Nina with him if we read between the lines. Speaking of lines, that line along the bottom is so they can repackage the strip or reduce the footprint for some newspapers? ![]() I see what you did there. Yes, I think that must be what that line signifiies, though I have no idea of the mechanics of it. I wonder how the papers that ran the full image removed the line. |

Rip Kirby 7/10/56 Owner: Ron S Comment posted on 10/20/2021
Marcus Wai said:
Very jam packed for a daily with such tight brushwork! Raymond has a way to elegantly show the scene to make it move the story effortlessly. ![]() yes, that circular inset is an unusual device for Raymond, isn't it. Adds to the jam-packed quality, borderline cluttered, but still beautiful. |

Reginald Thomas Cleaver, London Graphic Page 1906 Owner: Jim Latimer Comment posted on 10/16/2021
Jim Latimer said:
Dan, Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the piece. I was surprised when I first discovered his artwork several years back. Why had I never heard of this artist before? He checked all the boxes for work that I usually enjoy. I feel there is a vast, untapped, resovoir of his work out there. He deserves much more acclain. He had a brother, Ralph, who also worked for the publications of the day. ![]() Yes, it's spectacular. I only know of his work (and the whole genre of comics in illustrated papers of the period) from The Origins of Comics by Theirry Smoldern - there's a Reginald Cleaver reproduced in that book. I'm amazed that there are still originals around! |

Lank Leonard - Mickey FInn - "Dead End" 1940s? (WARNING: RACIST SLUR IN DIALOGUE) Owner: Dan Mazur Comment posted on 10/14/2021
Marcus Wai said:
This is a great reflection on society and how the casual racism was pervasive back then. The intended audience would be reinforced of their beliefs and behavior that this would be normalized and made acceptable by this and all the other forms of entertainment of this era. ![]() Oh wow I never read this strip carefully enough to notice the slur... thanks for pointing it out, I need to note it in the description. |

Fast Forward Magazine Allo Allo Art Owner: Richard Davies Comment posted on 8/16/2021

Yes, I can confirm. All are hand coloured. Not sure what was used though? If it was a mixture of inks & water colours? Looks like both to me close up. Nicely done whatever medium used.
Anyway, I bought them because I'm a fan of the show. And to be honest never realised a comic strip was done or read the Fast Forward Magazine in its day.?. My next project is to find the magazines the art features in. Going to be difficult task and detective work is needed as some pages don't have any information stating what year & issue number to aid me in my quest.. Oh, well? Wish me luck. I'm going need it. ![]() Show and comic are both unfamiliar to me, but I see the appeal. Good luck! |
