Star Wars 13 pg 23 (1978 - Infantino) Owner: Andrew Allen Comment posted on 11/10/2023
Eric B said:
Issue 13 was the first Star Wars comic I ever read, and that top panel was my favorite. The whole issue didn't seem much like the Star Wars shown in the movie, but the tension and drama the pirate story had was compelling in its own way. Congrats! ![]() Marvel writers understood from the jump what Lucas was doing with STAR WARS: cribbing ideas from other types of entertainment like WW2 air war movies and Japaese samauri films, and retrofitting them into a space fantasy troupe. MARVEL simply continued that process, lifting ideas from 'Magnificent Seven' 'Godzilla' 'Man of La Mancha' and classic pirate movies. |

Battlestar Galactica (MARVEL) Issue 18 pg 06 Owner: Andrew Allen Comment posted on 9/8/2023
Marcus Wai said:
Quite interesting as this is the same kind of practice that they use for the high budget special effects TV shows to base a few episodes to be grounded dramas rather than action genre spectaculars. They figured the audience would be back the next time anyways. At first glance, this is more planet of the apes. ![]() Certain episodes of GALACTICA were shockingly obvious riffs on familiar movie tropes, such as 'GUN ON ICE PLANET ZERO' being a pastiche of 'GUNS OF NAVARONE' and "THE LOST WARRIOR' being a homage of 'SHANE.' So, yes, taken in that light, there is a certain irony to having pages from earlier comics repurposed as GALACTICA storylines. |

Are those USAF planes based on a real plane? I would guess so, if MG went to all the trouble to be so specific with the Battle Cruiser wingfighters, why would he make up a plane's design? Doctor Strange 51 Owner: robert frey Comment posted on 2/27/2023 Everybody grumbles about 'That time when MARVEL was running those crummy banners about 10-Speed Bikes and ToysRUs across the top of all their covers'... but the truth is people REALLY remember that time because MARVEL's storytelling was across-the board knocking it out of the park. A real 'Golden Age' of comic storytelling. This issue and cover was a part of that. Congrats. |

Well let me fill you in then. When college senior Robbie Baldwin steps in for his sick roommate to interview prominent Victor Von Doom for their campus paper, little does he realize the path his life will take. Victor, as enigmatic as he is rich and powerful, finds himself strangely drawn to Robbie, and he to him. Though sexually inexperienced, Robbie plunges headlong into an affair -- and learns that Victor's true sexual proclivities push the boundaries of pain and pleasure. It's a real page turner. Marvel's answer to DC's Black Label line. ![]() Well, at least we know Victor wears The Glove consistently. This IS a Disney/Marvel book. |

Micronauts 04 pg 11 MICHAEL GOLDEN Owner: Andrew Allen Comment posted on 8/20/2022
Eric B said:
Golden didn't draw the page to look like a movie, he drew it to look like a particular movie – the Sci-fi Blockbuster of 1978. The alternating close-ups and full-shots which are still near the characters make you feel like you're in the room/scene with them, and makes the battle of these aliens, robots, and weird-dressed people real. No wonder this book won so many people over! ![]() My takeaway from this page is a little more nuts'n'bolts. Golden goes to great lengths to disguise that this page only has people talking. It takes tremendous storytelling skill to find a way to make a 'debate page' interesting. Plenty to learn from even the quiet pages. |
