Description

On Topolino (Mickey Mouse) magazine #3094 (March 2015) you can find the story "Dylan Top in: L'alba dei Topi invadenti", a Disney parody of Dylan Dog's first published issue "L'alba dei morti viventi" ("Dawn of the Living Dead"), written by Roberto Recchioni & Tito Faraci and illustrated by Paolo Mottura.

For those of you not familiar with the character, Dylan Dog is an Italian horror comics series featuring an eponymous character (a paranormal investigator) created by Tiziano Sclavi in 1986 for the publishing house Sergio Bonelli Editore. He's the most popular Bonelli's character just after Tex Willer.

A horror comic book and Disney characters didn't seem to have too much in common but they made it work, beautifully, and, since I love them both, it was just natural to think about a commission.
Paolo was the obvious choice, I was so happy when he agreed to do it!

I had a precise idea for this commission: London, night, it's snowing, there's Dylan Top trying to rescue Minnie that is threatened by a mad and monstrous villain that someway looks like Jack the Ripper, dressed in a cloak and top hat, and equipped with a sharp razor. The tone is definitely more horror than what we can see on a Disney story published in Topolino magazine.
I thought this would be terrifically drawn with pen & ink, but in the end, I told Paolo he could choose whatever technique he thought was better for the sake of the illustration. I'm glad I did.

Here's the painfully beautiful final piece.
Paolo captured every single element and did a terrific work, from the overall composition to the tiniest details and the amazing colors.
