DescriptionAlthough I have seen countless Disney animation drawings since I purchased this one about 42 years ago, I can't think of many others which so effectively depict the interaction between two characters or a sense of movements as seen here. I have from the outset preferred animation drawings to cels. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the actual Disney animators created the drawings, while cels were tracings by the women in Disney's ink and paint department, of art created by others. I don't mean to minimize the talent of those who made cels, and cels certainly hold up better visually when framed and hanging on a wall, but the drawings not only have more spontineity, in most cases, but they often have more variety in the handling of lines than do cels. I saw early on that the draftsmanship demonstrated in Disney publicity drawings from the 1930s was superior to that found in animation drawings, that is partly due, I'm sure, to the time that the publicity artists could devote to one image at a time, including the creation of backgrounds and compositions with multiple figures which simply are not part of the animation of characters to be seen very briefly until yet another image supplants their presence on a screen. Similarly, the publicity artist didn't need to convey actual movement, since their static images had to suceed through single views. Both types of drawings are incredibly impressive despite their different functions, but the nature of publicity drawings almost always make them the most satisfying to view compared to single animation drawings.I have always been astonished that so very few animation art collectors seem to know much at all about publicity drawings and that they neither care to know more, fail to see their obvious merits, and never show any interest in including examples in their animation art collections. Not that I'm complaining, since I don't want or need any more competition for publicity drawings; I just don't understand why I like the drawings so much and others don't. I'm right, of course!!!
