Description

I bought this cel at Collectors Book Store in Holllywood, California more than 25 years ago. Up until that time, I had only bought comic books, and I always dealt with one of the owners, Leonard Brown (who passed away this week [NOTE THE DATE THIS WAS ORIGINALLY POSTED], causing all of us who knew him to not only feel sadness over his loss but a true sense of a new void in the comic collecting universe). But I saw this cel in a showcase one day, undoubtedly noticing it because of the bright green in Peter Pan's outfit (I have always loved green above all other colors!), So I bought it, thinking to myself that it would probably be the only piece of animation art that I would ever have. At the time, a cel of a major Disney character from the 1950s features cost about 5 times the cost of a really nice condition copy of a Batman comic in the number 20s. I know because I bought a Batman 25 and 28 from Leonard at about the same time that I bought this cel. Of course, I ended up buying an animation drawing (of Pluto from Mickey's Parrot) within a couple of weeks. And then I bought a couple more cels (of the White Rabbit and one of the Caterpiller from Alice) in the next monthly Collectors Showcase auction. I also had th pleasure of beginning to deal with Howard Lowery, in addition to Leonard Brown, because of my new interest in animation art. For several years, I had casually known Howard, who was an employee of Collectors and who ran the original art department of the store, but we only became friends after my introduction to Disney art. It could fairly be said that the purchase of this cel was another huge milestone in my life, largely changing my social life and the course of my collecting comic art over the past quarter of a century. More details regarding how I collected animation art can be found in my galleries for Disney animation drawings, concept art, cels, and background paintings. Unfortunately, rising prices and collecting so many types of comic art, caused me to sell animation art to buy comic strip originals and English watercolors, just as my very extensive comic book collection had been decimated in favor of newer, more significant collecting interests.

Collectors Book Store also sold a nmber of noteworthy comic book and sciece fiction originals. I believe that they had all of the Mars Attacks gum card originals, as well as many originals for the 1966 red back Batman cards. In their direct sales catalogues, they sold Kirby's original for the Toys for Tots Poster, The Splash to the second story of Hawkman No. 1 by Anderson, and many other originals for both Marvel and D.C. stories.

The last (126th) Collectors Showcase auction ended on 6 Sept 1989, more than 10 years after they had begun. Thanks to Leonard Brown's foresight, the store had not run out of inventory, despite the ever-increasing competition for new material to sell. In the last auction, the store was still able to offer in one lot 7 pages of original art by Kirby from X-Men issues 14, 15, and 17.
