Description
Here's a stunning Chris Bachalo cover for Uncanny X-Men #600, drawn for the climactic issue of his run with Brian Michael Bendis! Bachalo included over thirty Mutants (and one Sentinel) on this dazzling cover. I love the sleek, minimalist style Bachalo developed for this run of Uncanny X-Men. Clearly Bachalo was influenced by Moebius, Joe Mad and Japanese manga, but he took all those influences and created something uniquely his own. I love the way he drew all the characters in full figure with linework, but then added spot blacks for the characters he wanted to draw our attention to--Magik, Cyclops, Professor X, Emma Frost, and so forth. This minimalist style is very different from the more realistic style he used during his first stint on X-Men. But then, throughout his career Chris has never let himself be boxed in by one style, he’s always adapted his style to suit the story. Here, together with inker Jamie Mendoza, Bachalo redefined the look of the X-Men making it sleeker, more modern and more distinctive. It’s impressive work, IMHO, and I'm delighted to add it to my collection.

I love an anniversary issue so congrats for adding this to your collection! Bachalo has definitely drawn covers with more dynamic staging of the characters but this has all of what you'd expect from an anniversary issue: loads of well-drawn individualized X-Men that, as a whole, convey how far the series has come from its starting point in X-Men #1.

It's a simple treatment, to create this kind of contrast. And here, it makes the piece that much more impactful. Congrats Bill!

Boy oh boy, you just couldn't ask for more in a Bachalo X-Men cover.  Or any Bachalo cover period.  Despite the heavy content, the image never looks cluttered or indistinguishable.  Even just looking at the smaller thumbnail, it's power and beauty are hard to deny.  Another excellent acquisition my friend.

It's a fantastic representation of the many years and many line ups of varied characters in the entire run of the X-Men.  The fully inked in characters show the current lineup in this story and are done with the Bachalo sense of style that has been popular ever since his original run in the 300's.  Plus it's got Cyclops prominently featured as the most long tenured and respected leader of the team.

Man, I can't tell you how much I love multi-character team covers like this one, and when it's a Chris Bachalo X-Men cover, it's even more beyond words.  Holding this stunner in your hands must give you such an electrical charge,  And I agree with you that Bachalo is a master at adapting his style to the flavor of the particular characters and story.   Anyway, major congrats, Bill!!

I really like the nice, graphic arts sensibility that Bachalo brought to this piece. Everything had a flattened look to it rather than three dimensional, giving an almost "paper dolls" feel to it. But what I find really interesting is in trying to suss out what the editor wanted, because what the colorist did ultimately does not go along with what Bachalo was trying to do. Clearly, he and Mendoza brought the eye's attention to the front seven. But the colorist then brought the focal point specifically to Cyclops by coloring him brighter than everyone else. I understand the decision to digitally enlarge and slightly reposition him, no doubt to make up for the fact that Bachalo drew Emma Frost too tall. But the coloring makes me curious as to why Cyclops was the only figure colored to stand out more than the others. These are the fun types of mysteries that I love, as it makes me think about the artistic and in this case, editorial process and helps give some insight into the decision making process that goes into creating comics in the first place, which is a nice bonus that comes along with getting the art itself. Kudos, Bill!

One of my favorite of the Bachalo X-Men covers. There are so many great characters represented here, all with a little Bachalo flair. I mean, look at that Doop. And the foreground figures, with their heavy black inks, this looks just as good in BW as it did in color.

Interesting composition and deft problem solving by Bachalo. Drawing upright, gesturally arrhythmic figures like this creates real challenges in creating something interesting, but Chris pulls it off in service to his design idea. Bachalo almost made it through the whole image with his motif intact, until Kurt decided to mess with the formula!

Wow!!! Despite the minimalist style they all still look powerful!! It is amazing how different artists have seen and drawn the X-Men through the ages... and Cyclops is always there!!! Cyclops is the heart of the x-X-Men!!! Bachalo innovates but being respectful with the heroes! This artwork is an incredible addition to your dazzling collection!

That's a fun one. It reminds me of that action figure trend in (Marvel) variant covers except this has more personality (Jubilee comes to mind here).

(and you can add Michael Golden to that list of influences btw ;)

Really interesting looking piece.  Even though it's drawn mostly with evenly weighted lines, nothing looks flat.  Bachalo boiled down his style into real minimalism.

Outstanding example from Bachalo's X run.  SO many mutants, and love in the B&W OA here, how those in the middle have the heavy block inks.  Really adds for some contrast that makes you want to pore over the board that much more.  Congrats, Bill!

This is one of my very favorite covers of his. It's such a simple but dynamic layout, and an excellent take on a Roll-Call covers. As you said, using those spot blacks to bring the central characters into focus was such a great choice. And he gave everyone nice detail and an on-character pose/look. Bachamazing!

Right ON!  Another glorious add to your collection, Bill; a super fun inventory/checklist of Bachalo favorites (including Doop and Globb!), and it's fun to "flip through" them, front to back, identifying all of them like a wicked cool stack of mutant flash cards (that is, flash cards depicting mutants, not, well, "mutant flash cards"... :) ).  How cool is it to see Wolverine left in wireframe here for a change (rather than fully rendered)... although I admit to loving seeing Nightcrawler and (classic!) Storm filled in here, even though they weren't on this era's official "Uncanny" team.  Most importantly (on any Bachalo piece fro this run) Magik looks like a million bucks! :) Congrats, Bill!  Killer score!

Saw this when Kwan had it. Foolishly hesitated cause it was only Mendoza inks on blues, but it's so KILLER. Published inks present so much better than pencils IMHO. Congrats!
