DescriptionOur friendly neighborhood Fed Ex man delivered this a few weeks ago. By artist Lawrence Sterne Stevens, it illustrates "The Blue Flamingo" by fellow illustrator (and sometime author) Hannes Bok, from the January 1948 issue of Startling Stories.Social/Sharing |

I was noticing that the characters had their hands behind their backs and thought- it must be a story point, or else the artist was trying on some level to avoid drawing them. Then I saw the man's feet were behind a bunch of stuff and thought.. maybe Rob Leifeld is a huge Hans Bok Fan. Overall really enjoy the rendering here and the magical anti-gravity force that is keeping the woman's dress from coming down farther. Big Congrats on a rare pick up!

I see no flamingo!! You should send it back....or to me! I will happily look after it :)
this is otherwise exquisite though! I don't know the story at all but a fantastically composed and rendered illustration

Hubba hubba! That negligee is hanging just like my eyes are suspended there waiting for it to fall. A perfect setting of lush natural forms to have all this beautiful illustrative linework. The hidden man and woman made of wood are also interesting figure creations that make us look twice for story content.

A beauty of an illustration. The figures forming from the background are subtle. Makes for a very interesting image to be studied and appreciated!
Congratulations Doug and thanks for posting this to share with us all!

Great technique. Even some stipple on her face. Interesting setting. And some kind of lurid for its time. Beautiful.

I begin to think that this Stevens fellow has a degree of talent. (Adjusts monocle)

A great example of this very talented (and neglected) artist's work.
