Sal Buscema - New Mutants #8, p. 3 (Marvel, 1983)

New Mutants co-creator Bob McLeod provided the pencils for the first three issues of the junior X-team's series, but, found it difficult to maintain a high level of artistic quality while keeping up with the book's monthly schedule. As such, he prompted veteran artist Sal Buscema to provide the breakdowns starting with issue #4, while McLeod fleshed out the art and meticulously inked issues #4-5 and 7-8 as well as drawing a number of the early covers before leaving the series.

While McLeod would later describe his time on the New Mutants as "one of the most frustrating experiences" of his career, what he did contribute artistically (in addition to co-creating the series with writer Chris Claremont) is impressive. IMO, McLeod was one of the best inkers of that era in comics, and I present this page as Exhibit A.

Sal is credited as the penciler for the issue, but it's mentioned online that he actually provided the breakdowns (rough pencils), which makes more sense to me as you don't see a lot of his hand in this page - it's an inking masterclass from McLeod, really clean & tight with great detail and excellent use of shadow. This is a page I can stare at for a long time - I just have so much appreciation for McLeod's work here.
