DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #245, teaming Batman with Doctor Fate, adapted from the Marie Severin / Frank Giacoia cover to Sub-Mariner #22, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.January 1941 - and Bruce Wayne receives a strange letter, sent by his one-time college contemporary, an archaeology student named Duncan Arlington, who was expelled for stealing and selling ancient artifacts discovered by the college's archaeology department, and who later became infamous for looting historical sites and tombs in the Middle East and China, as well as Central and South America. The letter tells Wayne that Arlington has been captured and is being held prisoner by a cult - the Disciples Of Shathan - and he implores Wayne to retrieve a statue which he stole from the cult and concealed in a graveyard in New England, and return it so Arlington will be freed. Intrigued, Wayne decides that he should help ... and shortly, in a windowless tower in Salem, Massachusetts, Doctor Fate peers into the Orb Of Nabu, observing the Batmobile speeding through the night - and Fate passes through the walls of his tower and flies into the darkness! Batman arrives in the New England graveyard which the letter specified, and - after a brief reconnaisance - finds a newly-filled grave marked with a headstone bearing Arlington's name! Fearing that his one-time acquaintance might be interred within the grave, the Gotham Guardian frantically digs into the earth with his hands, uncovering a smnall statue - but as he is about to remove it from the grave, he's paralyzed by a magical incantation, and the unearthly voice of Doctor Fate warns him not to touch what he has uncovered! As he releases Batman from his spell, Doctor Fate tells his fellow hero that what he has unearthed is not simply a statue, but an avatar of Hatred, one of the Seven Deadly Enemies Of Man, and that touching it could prove fatal. Batman draws back - and a horde of cultists, wearing scarlet cloaks and cowls burst from the shadows! The Gotham Guardian concludes that these must be the Disciples Of Shathan, and leaps into battle - but six of the cultists draw daggers from their cloaks, rush past the Gotham Guardian, and slash their palms, dripping blood onto the statue, as their leader (his face hidden by his cowl) begins to chant in an ancient, unhuman tongue! Batman continues to fight with the other cult members, but the statue starts to grow, and to move, as the six members who had surrounded it fall to the ground, dead! Doctor Fate, realising that an ancient ritual has animated Hatred's avatar, casts spell after spell in an attempt to restrain it - but is himself battered by a magical burst thrown by the leader of the Disciples Of Shathan! Calling out to Batman to restrain the cult leader, Fate continues to weave his magic, slowly surrounding the growing statue with an arcane cage of mystical force... ... while Batman fights his way through the Disciples Of Shathan, and hurls himself at the cult's leader, catching him unawares and knocking him to the ground! A flurry of punches from the Gotham Guardian is sufficient to send his opponent into unconsciousness, and that allows Doctor Fate to finish his spell, which surrounds Hatred's avatar, shrinking it back to the size of the statue and trapping it! Meanwhile, Batman pulls the hood from the cult's leader, who is revealed as ... Duncan Arlington! He confesses that he had intended to lure Bruce Wayne to the graveyard with the intent of kidnapping him, so that the cult could steal the Wayne fortune and use it to further their own ends, and ultimately summoning Shathan to Earth - and the statue, which had been in the cult's possession for years, was nothing more than the bait in a trap. Only Batman's unexpected intervention - and the involvement of Doctor Fate - had foiled their plan; if Wayne had come as requested, nothing could have stopped them! Batman grins to himself, since he of course knows that Bruce Wayne *is* present, but says nothing as he ties up the cultists and prepares to summon the local police force - and Doctor Fate flies off, with the statue in tow, to reunite it with the full form of Hatred, in a tunnel accessible via a subway station in Fawcett City.... Next time: a Nazi menace! A co-star from the All-Star Squadron! And action, action, action! Social/Sharing |

Two characters that work better in this milieu than the original Marvel pair.
