Description

I got this from a store called Mandarake in Tokyo. It is so hard to find original manga art, I almost flipped when I saw this as I thought it was a Go Nagai page from the original manga series (it wasn't, but more on that later). Devilman is one of the must-read manga books that started in the early 1970's. Jr. high boys all over Japan went crazy for it as it contained nudity, devil worshiping orgies and ultra-violence that had Japanese PTA's up in arms.

This, however, was drawn by one of Nagai's assistants, Hiruta Mitsuru, who drew it for the more kid-friendly manga adaptation of the animation series (which cut out all the nudity, orgies and ultra-violence). Regardless, it is a "subarashi" example of the "shonen" (boy manga) esthetic: Speed lines! Giant fists! Action!

Ok, you got to let me know if you ever want to get rid of this! I met Go at Comic-con International one year and am kicking myself for not keeping the sketch he drew for me. Cool piece of Devil Man!

Wow, great art. Go Nagi is one of the masters of his field. If it's difficult to get manga art in Japan it's no wonder I can't find any in the states.
