DescriptionIn 1818 George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was horrified to see several women hanged for using forged pound notes. For this he drew a cartoon - into which he forged a mock pound note. The result, eventually, was the end of hanging for all minor offences. Not bad for a cartoon!Cruikshank also illustrated Dickens, including Oliver Twist. This item is a signed address card for a package. In an interestingly comics-related sidenote the receiver, sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, bart, MP, was the Victorian novelist who began one of his works with the now infamous phrase "It was a dark and stormy night"!
