Raboy, Mac - Flash Gordon, 12-25-1966

Born in 1914, Mac Raboy began his art career with the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal era. He would eventually make the move into comics by joining the Harry A. Chesler studio of comic artists in the 1940's (a studio that included the likes of Mort Meskin). He would gain early fame as the illustrator for the comic titles Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama.

Raboy admired Alex Raymond - he kept a collection of Raymond's Flash Gordon work available in his studio as inspiration for his own work. In 1946, he would be hired by King Features Syndicate to assume the creative role for the Sunday page adventures of Flash Gordon until his death in 1967.

Many collectors focus on earlier periods for collecting Raboy Flash Gordon, but his 1960's work seems to be very inspired - and the detail in the piece is evidence of that. Flash Gordon, spaceships, domed cities...a great piece from a seriously talented artist.
