Description
Namor, the intemperate and aloof King of Atlantis, sets about putting together a crack team for a sensitive mission, requiring secrecy, diplomacy and tact. First, he enlisted the Silver Surfer, a cosmic being renowned for his inability to understand human motivation and whose presence, until only recently before, had heralded the total annihilation of whole worlds at the ever-hungry maw of Galactus. Not content with having only two-ticking time bombs in the team, the Sub Mariner then attempts to enlist the Hulk, the globally feared and intellectually challenged emerald war machine, renowned for his inability to follow even the most basic of instructions. The mission was in many ways less successful than it could have been, nearly resulting in the needless deaths of Giant Man and Donald Blake. Nevertheless, the ‘Titans Three’ were soon to become the core of the most grossly overpowered and perennially unreliable superhero team in the Marvel stable, the Defenders!
Sal Buscema’s dynamic storytelling evidently delighted Jim Mooney to deliver exceptionally fine inking, even by his high standards, making them such a pleasing partnership in the ‘70s. I desperately wanted a fight scene between Namor and the Hulk, and I couldn’t believe my luck in getting this action-packed page. (Nevertheless, Namor’s plan to enlist the Hulk by punching him straight in the face is a particularly odd premise to this titanic contest.)

Such a significant story and beautiful piece of art. I was extremely fortunate to score a page from this issue last year as well. Congratulations and thank you for sharing!

Just an awesome vintage battle page between 3 legit Marvel powerhouses!  There's really something to see in every panel and it has a nice flow as you go down the page.  Really like that booming Subby punch in panel 4!  Congrats!

So many great shots of the big 3 - and the middle, landscape panel does not disappoint!

An absolutely SPECTACULAR page from one of my all time favorite comic issues!  Of course it features three of my four favorite core members from my favorite super team.  But even without Doc Strange, this page is still a thing of beauty.  Congratulations on this gem.  So jealous!

Crazy, crazy page with Marvel powerhouses.  Gaining Hulk's attention is rarely a good idea!  Used to own the Oakland pedigree of this comic.

This page is a thing of beauty. Sal's Silver Surfer could give big brother John's rendition a run for its money.

Such an AWESOME PAGE from an absolutely HISTORIC comic!!! Just LOVE the simple panel design featuing a large middle panel and the Hulk images are just fantastic! Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney were just perfect on this comic... their VERY BEST collaboration together with each complimenting each other perfectly!!!

John is responsible for so many great comics, but my favorites are Subby and Mr. Sparkle. That Middle panel is glorious! Mr. Purple Pants is a fun bonus. Just an outstanding page!!

Not only is the page beyond awesome, your write-up does it justice, and was highly entertaining in it's own right. The characters have so many bad ideas here, but the artists' depiction of them is absolutely perfect.
