Description

During Simonson�s first run on Thor, early in his career, Marvel assigned a lot of very strong inkers. I know that many fans felt that much of what he was trying to do was overpowered by Tony DeZuniga, Joe Sinnott and Ernie Chan. I guess I admire the work of all three inkers enough to be perfectly happy with the outcome. This page has Simonson breakdowns and finishes by Ernie Chan.
This Annual was a slightly strange one, with most of the story taking place in flashback. Roy Thomas wanted to bring Kirby�s Eternals more formally into the Marvel Universe. Wanting to know whether anything can be done to save Balder (and avoid Ragnarok), Thor visits the ever intemperate Mimir. That link to the storyline in the main title gave Thomas the opportunity for an eccentric story hook in which Mimir tells Thor of an adventure in his past in which he meets the Eternals � a tale that, improbably, Thor has no recollection of.
This page shows all of Simonson�s early ambition on a title he clearly loved � the unusual, cinematic angles, and the spectacle of a detailed and crowded battle scene. More was to come from Simonson on Thor, but I think this is an impressive glimpse into his talent.
