DescriptionNew commission: All-Star Squadron #92, art by sometime JSA inker Andrew Pepoy, homaging as always the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Legion Of Super-Heroes #283, original art by Jim Aparo (original cover posted for comparison). This is the third "Altered Egos" issue, following issues #77 (Mr Terrific) and #84 (Guardian), in which Jonathan (Tarantula) Law sits down with one of his fellow Squadron members and collects notes for his post-war book. In this case, obviously the spotlight falls (sorry!) on the Ray, with 'Happy' Terrill recounting his origin, how his newly-gained powers caused his girlfriend to walk out on him - and later betray him to the Nazis, which led to battles with both Baron Blitzkrieg and Captain Nazi, and his first meeting with the entire Squadron roster. (The "betrayal by his former girlfriend" idea is mine, as a way to explain why the Ray didn't have a love interest in the Golden Age or the initial Squadron run - and yes, I know that later writers have retconned him as being gay, and I have no issue with that, but I'm 'writing' these as though they were being printed in the 1980s, when that simply wouldn't have got approved by the Comics Code.) Andrew did a phenomenal job on this one - and I'm delighted that he was able to do it, since he contacted me out of the blue having seen previous covers I'd posted to say he'd be interested in doing one. I think I got a great cover out of it! Incidentally, for those that care about such minutiae, the choice of characters in the "Squadron" corner stems in part from my love of the visual pun - Phantom Lady, with her black-light ray, standing in for Shadow Lass and her darkness power; Flash, who has a lightning bolt for a symbol, doubling for Lightning Lad; Air Wave's antenna earpieces reminded me of Timber Wolf's early-1980s pointy-haired look; Starman had to stand in for Star Boy; and Firebrand was the obvious counterpart for Saturn Girl in my head since they both wore pink costumes based on swimsuits. Zatara is there because the original Legionnaire is unidentifiable, and I wanted someone who *could* be identified from a head-shot, and I hadn't used him beforehand. Social/Sharing |

On so many levels, least of all is which, the choice of inspiration cover, I love this. Well Done
