Gallen-Kallela, book cover prelim, 1894

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) is just about the most famous and celebrated Finnish artist of all time. His paintings (especially those based on the Finnish National epic Kalevala) form the core of the permanent exhibit of the Finnish National Gallery, and all other major Finnish art institutions. His former studio outside Helsinki is also now a museum.
He worked in styles of realism, symbolism and jugend (art nouveau), ranging from oil paintings to frescos, etchings and design.
I wondered if I'd ever be able to find a Gallen-Kallela drawing that would fit my collection. I have seen very few drawings ever come up for sale during my time collecting.
Now I managed to find a more significant piece than I ever could have imagined possible: a color prelim for the cover of a "christmas album", a book really, published by Päivälehti in 1894, titled Nuori Suomi (Young Finland).
It is based on Kalevala and features the character of Kullervo from the 31st poem, carving images on an oak tree.
The finished piece must have been a pen and ink line drawing, so I'm guessing this is the only version of this image that exists hand painted in color. It seems to have been used as a printing guide: notes have been scribbled in the upper left-hand corner on how to print the decorative ribbons.
The finished version is very close to this prelim: the only major changes are that Kullervo's face has been made more visible and his pose is slightly different. But other than that, this is very close.
For a Finn, this is such a major find that I'm still pinching myself: can it even be possible that someone like me can actually own this, a Gallen-Kallela original... of Kalevala, no less!
