DescriptionCover dated September 1986.Classic X-Men was my first exposure to the wonderful world of Claremont and Cockrum’s X-Men. Copies of the original back issues were way beyond my budget as a 9 year-old kid when this book came out, so the reprints in Classic X-Men were a godsend to me. The new stories by Claremont and John Bolton at the back of the books were icing on the cake. I must have read issue #1 a dozen times the first week it hit the stands. Even as a kid I appreciated the beauty of Bolton’s art, as I realized his work was different (more grown up?) than what I seeing in the other books I was buying at the time. The interaction between Professor X and Jean at the end of the issue was particularly poignant, although I loved every single page by Bolton. I’m grateful that I’ve been able to pick up a page from another comic book book that was key to the development of my love for the art form. Social/Sharing |

I first noticed Bolton's work thanks to his stories on Classic X-Men and my admiration has steadily grown since then. Congrats on this beautiful and so significant page!

The shadow play here is so much more effective in black and white. Great piece.

Showing Jean’s mind in the quiet Bolton line
You know that I bought it
Bad, bad boy
Brings me joy with a price
You know that I sought it
X in shadows, from the window
I'm always reading for who to be mutant heroes
Logan’s not so nice, Angels rolls his eyes
What doesn't kill me, brings Jean back for more
And it's new, attraction to Wolvie
It's blue, the feeling from Scott
And it's ooh, whoa, oh
He’s a cruel Summers
It's cool, that's what I tell him
No rules, he made her a Goblin
But ooh, whoa oh
He's a cruel Summers
With you
Shave your head now
In the glow of the morning dawn scene
In the timing
You say that I'll just screw it up in these trying times
Jean is quitting
So cut his headlights, Summers with slice
I'm always waiting for Wolve just to cut through his bone
Logan brings the fight, Angel rolls his eyes
And if he bleeds, he'll be the last to know
Oh, it's new, attraction to Wolvie
It's true, the feeling I've got
And it's ooh, whoa, oh
He’s a cruel Summers
It's cruel, that's what I tell him
No rules abandoning Nathan
But ooh, whoa, oh
He's a cruel Summers
With you
I'm drunk with the words of Claremont
And I cried like a baby coming home with the art (oh)
Said, "I'm fine, " but it wasn't true
I just wanna read reprints from those issues
And I read it through ‘cause the artwork’s great
Every night this summer just to seal my fate (oh)
And I screamed for the price that it's worth
"I love you, " ain't that the best thing a dealer’s heard?
He looks up grinning like a devil

On Earth-616, Taylor dated Logan after John Mayer and later wrote multiple breakup songs about her "mystery man with the laser eyes."

These Bolton back-ups definitely eased the pain of buying a reprint book. So good.

So happy for you for getting another significant page from your childhood reading experiences. And this is truly a gem, with beautiful art and really interesting dialogue & insights into Jean and her emotions. Congrats!!

I love the subtle lines...they give such a sense of gentle-ness to the scene. And yet so much weight. Congrats!

John Bolton's fine line always drew me in as a reader. Even on a quiet page, the expressions and character poses draw you in. A real beauty, my friend!

Never read this, but may have to check it out. I like that more subdued look, particularly for this quieter scene. And a gorgeous profile shot in that last panel. Congrats!

Marvel put out an X-Men Classic Omnibus a few years ago with all of the Bolton backup stories and all other supplemental materials from the Classic X-Men series. Definitely worth checking out if it's still in print.

Great page - somehow feels super modern and not close to 40 years old.

Congrats MIchael. Classic X-Men was also instrumental in my intro to comics, Marvel, and the X-Men. And the Bolton back ups were so different and character driven - I fell in love with the X-Men then.. I've managed to snag one from issue #13 and it means a lot to me, like this page does for you.
