Wonderful! Now all you have to do is change your name to Keith!
Pure Byrne Goodness! This really brings back memories. Congrats Bill!
SO heroic looking! And wow, so epic to have such a beautiful JOHN BYRNE SUPERMAN COVER!! Always so excited to see your new posts, Bill, thanks so much for sharing.
Fantastic Cover!
A prime example of John drawing Supes!
Sharp lines and space-y wonder! Byrne at his best!
Congrats, beautiful cover with a lot of fond memories attached to it!
Byrne at the peak of his powers! Incredible cover!
Look out! It's a bird! It's a plane! No... it's two birds and Superman! Nice pick-up by the legend John Byrne.
WoooooooooW Very beautiful piece DC comics by the master - Congratulations my friend !!!
Byrne delivers such an impressive cover here! What an amazing acquisition!!!
What a beautiful Byrne Superman cover! Man, I wish he was still drawing
One of the best covers Byrne drew for his 17-issue Action Comics run. Congrats, Bill!
Drawn to perfection! Byrne killed it on this one.
Excellent!!
Fantastic Byrne Action cover, stunning - congrats Bill!
This the kind of cover that would get me to buy the book, congrats on a great pick up.
I really liked how they used this title as Superman's team-up book. It made for some really spectacular covers, like this one. Byrne was still firing on all cylinders during his Superman work. He was one of the very few artists who could get me to even pick up a Superman comic. Anyway, great cover. With not one, not two, but three characters! Congrats!
Gosh, I remember how absolutely excited I was when the earth shattering news of Byrne's departure from Marvel to move over to revamp Superman at DC hit all the hobby periodicals. It was probably, to this day even, the biggest news about any comic book artist ever announced. That he was taking over not only a brand new Superman title but also Action Comics and that the latter would be turned into a Team-Up comic, well that was just out of this world exciting! As fan of ALL winged characters, I've always been partial to Hawkman and Hawkgirl, so to see them both here backing up Superman, it was just such a thrill! What can you say, really? Byrne at the peak of his power and popularity! An amazing piece of DC 80's history!
What a great cover Bill! Love the composition and the eye is smoothly guided to take in each character!
Great images of three iconic DC superheroes. Congrats!
It's soaring and inspirational! Much like Ikarus with wings getting close to the sun, only these three won't melt under the pressure! Great composition by Byrne with all the in V formation! Would have worked great during WWII as well.
Baller.
Soaring higher than an eagle! Congrats!
Any Byrne cover from this time period is a cause for celebration. Congrats !
Great classic superheroes by Byrne. Congrats!
It's a Byrne, it's not plain, it's a super cover!
Awesome Byrne cover, congrats Bill!
Wow! Beautiful cover! Love the contrast of this image. Ive always loved the designs of Hawkman; major congrats Bill!
Better without the titles. Super piece.
Always look forward to your posts (and you never disappoint)!
This title was so cool b/c you got not only Byrne Superman, but guest stars by Byrne! Superman as the central figure with the Hawks at his side exemplifies the intent to continue on in the DC Comics Presents tradition (but just in the pages of Action Comics).
Awesome Cover!
Into the cosmos... a transcendant scene that would take anyone's breath away, but not these heroes'! Byrne at the peak of his powers, tasked with a memorable cover -- and does he deliver. Congrats on yet another monumental addition!
Fantastic cover by one if the best. Congrats!!
But your honour, Free Bird was playing.
Congrats on this vintage DC BYRNE cover!
Striking image of Superman as only Byrne can do. I also love the nod to Hawkman and Hawkgirl.
Great triangular composition for a peak Superman Byrne cover
What a great prime period Byrne cover!! I'm jealous!! Congrats!!
Beautiful Byrne on Byrne piece! I love the composition with the 3 heroes in flight. The simple, but interesting background is perfect as well. Really makes the characters pop off the page. Amazing cover!
WOWZA!!!
OK, this one takes the cakebreak! It vies for my all-time favorite Byrne Action Comics cover, and is a great callback to the Superman frontispiece in the Art of John Byrne, Vol. 1, huge congrats!
What a powerful cover. As you described the technique with pencils and inks on this one is verywell executed and almost perfect. Superb images of the heroes they look like almost gods. I agree you on the magnetism of the characters, Excellent. Huge congratulations.
Superb Byrne heroics! Great write up, Bill, that really encapsulates so many of the special things about this piece: portraits of not one, but -three- heroes beautifully realized by Byrne (yet no one can upstage Supes! :) ). The simple, strong compositional design is paired with brilliant execution and balance (setting the darker wings against the white sun & Superman's white flight trail against the black backdrop of space) to create an image that is super tight, terrifically exciting, and totally deadline-friendly. Byrne is the consummate pro, and this cover (just like your collection, Bill) is out of this world. Wow - MEGA-congrats, Bill!!
Excellent cover!!!
Love this series, and Byrne Superman covers. Interesting and of note, Byrne was experimenting with computer graphics and I believe the bg stars was rendered on an early Macintosh (Byrne would have to confirm) and early example of digital art in comics!
Powerful image! Normally, not a fan of symmetry, but it works perfectly here. Huge congrats!!
very nice, what a cracker
Wow! What a great Byrne Superman Cover!
Excellent!
Just really cool seeing the 3 flying heroes, but 2 with arms AND wings spread and one with just arms :) The Supes particularly...just classic Byrne. No doubt it's HIS Supes when you see it! Classic action and Action cover, Bill, congrats!
Strong and staight "as superhero as can be" cover by the John and I endorse all words that you write in the description. And: poor pitiful Hawkgirl was not even mentioned in the "announcement" title text... although this goodie is not from the 1950s and drawn by a great fan and master artist that always loved to write and draw beautiful and strong-willed female comic characters in so many series...! Anyway, huge congrats!
This is ICONIC! AND GORGEOUS! Congrats!
Lovely. Just lovely.
Great cover! I love how powerful Sups looks on this.
Cool period in the post-Crisis DC Universe. Byrne was setting up the relationships between Superman and a bunch of DC characters. Even after so many artists had previously taken on Superman, Byrne was still able to create his own unique vision of Superman and other DC characters. Even the whole "no more blue hair" thing was news !! The pixelated space background is more apparent than in print.
Great Byrne Superman cover. Not sure how intentional it is, but with the framing and tangent lines, it almost looks like Supes is carrying the sun on his shoulders (and Atlas thought he had it bad...). In any case, congrats on another stellar pickup!
Superb cover Bill !
The images of Superman with the Hawk's are fantastic !
Inking is amazing too , Byrne is a very complete artist.
Like a lot the union of the background with white gouache to make the sun flames...
Congrats again...whats next ? 😂
Prime example of Byrne's work on Superman. Fantastic pickup, Bill!
Terrific cover is an understatement - this is great!
Very classic, very powerful!
Absolute perfect Byrne Superman, a perfect rendering from a master. Hearty congratulations!
Majestic.
Outstanding piece by the master, congrats!
WOW. This is the perfect Byrne. I love the way the wings were inked and the use of negative spacing throughout. Stunning.
Fantastic image, with Byrne still at his peak. I remember when this came out.
How wonderful. I am blown away by your collection. Merry Christmas my friend.
you can never go wrong with some JB! Classic layout + dramatic costumes + fantastic rendering = one beautiful pick-up!
