Description

An amazing jam piece from 1971 by Spiegelman, Kinney, Lynch, Williamson and Roth - a key piece of underground comics history commissioned by Alan Douglas as an advertisement for the Douglas Records label and published in Douglas Comix #1 in 1972 by Kitchen Sink Press.

The reach of Douglas Records in 1971 is vividly illustrated by the list of topics down the left side of the piece: Lenny Bruce, Malcolm X, Jerry Garcia and others. The amount of character detail is incredible - I count at least 13 different character images (some reference multiple characters).

And, of course, topped off by Spiegleman's dog peeing into the gramophone. A very early use by him of anthropomorphic animals with human traits, long before the first chapter of Maus appeared in Raw Magazine.

Just an incredible piece of underground comic art history. Thanks to Scott Eder for letting this one go.
