Description
A great, if improbable, story of mistaken identities for this issue – with Kirby returning to a favourite theme of gangsters. Peppi Lamoko poses as the owner of a respectable hotel, the “Murder Lodge” of the title of the issue, but has a contract on three hoodlums – who just happen to resemble Mr. Miracle, Barda and Shilo Norman.

On this page, Lamoko tries to finish off Shilo with the old door guillotine trick, but he has been trained too well by Mister Miracle to fall for that one! Bold shadows from Royer give the hotel a slightly spooky feel, over Kirby compositions that spin the reader around the action.

Ha ha! Well, of course - I haven't been trained by Mister Miracle, of course...

The tuition for Escape class is steep but well worth the investment. As is/was the investment in this excellent 6-panel Kirby/Royer gem from Mister Miracle. Sweet page!

Thanks, Kavi! And I guess the students need to pay their fees up front - just in case.

Yes, on the Fourth World pages Royer seemed to be Kirby's best inker. I was surprised by how dense the black areas are on this one - really, lush. Thanks!

Lamoko is getting too smart using that old guillotine in the door trick!

Ha ha! Yes, a dastardly villain with a dastardly mustache. Barda will cut him down to size.

Great art throughout this issue. Those bottom panels are the hype! Recalls the most frenetic panels of the Simon & Kirby era.

Thanks. True, the pacing is pretty fast in this story.

This is why I am always wary of doorways. Great movement and interiors from the King!

It's been proven again and again: however zany the concept may be, Jack Kirby will turn it into a powerhouse! There are multiple examples of this scattered among the Fourth World epic issues... and here is another great one! I have always loved MM 17 for all his excess and breakneck speed story... Congrats for this great page!

The master at play, paving the way for all sequential art to come. That look in the third panel is chilling.

The lighting in each of these traditional 6 panels is extraordinary, throw in some onomatopoeia and you have yourself a great interior.
