Description

I’ve always thought that the Golden Age Sandman was one of the coolest-looking heroes in comics. Little did I know that Sandman Mystery Theatre would become a series that resonated with me so deeply, ultimately becoming one of my all-time favorite runs.

Beyond Wesley Dodds’ iconic character design, what really drew me into the series was artist Guy Davis. At that point, I was already a major fan of his work on titles like B.P.R.D. and The Marquis, but there is something truly special about how Guy's art perfectly fit these gritty, atmospheric stories.

Of all the story arcs across this 70+ issue run, “Night of the Butcher” is the one that really stuck with me. While it might have been one of the simpler stories narratively, it was definitely one of the most gruesome. As a fan of the horror genre, the plot of hunting down a cannibal serial killer in the sewers of New York is right up my alley.

Fast forward almost a decade later, and I stumbled upon this piece. It was originally created as an advertisement leaflet promoting that very arc. I believe Guy did several of these for various other storylines, though I'm not sure if he created one for every arc. Because the actual covers for this series were photographic, these promotional pieces feel like the closest things we have to true comic covers by the artist himself.

This particular piece features a striking, movie-poster-esque composition, showcasing a full-body figure of the Sandman while the Butcher lurks in the darkness, brandishing his weapons of choice. Plus... zipatone and bricks! What more could you ask for?

Peak Guy Davis Sandman!  The use of screen and tones provide the pulp look from a bygone era that this series was bringing to us.  This is why there are so many fans of Davis' work on this title.

You know you said it perfectly about how the screen and tones added to what made it so reminiscent of the era. I was really trying to write something in the descriptions along the lines of this but just couldnt put the thought together haha Thanks a bunch Marcus!

Oh. My. Gawd.

It's like having a Guy Davis SMT cover...and given that the covers were photographic, a feat indeed.

Congrats.

Wow that's amazing dude!!! Incredible ad piece for a great run. Your write up basically says it all, not much to add. the Wesley Dodds GA Sandman character design is still one of the best to ever occur in comics and this series revitalized its relevancy for a new generation of fans. Huge congrats!

Memorable ad for the series. I think I had dropped the book but came back on board for this storyline.

Nothing! You can't ask for anything more! First of all, I LOVE house ad artwork! Secondly, Davis' work on this add blows away any and every interior page I've ever seen from Sandman. What an incredible find for a Davis Sandman fan. Congratulations, David, well done and well deserved!
