DescriptionFile this one in the "I can't believe I own this!" category! The X-Men had been my introduction to comics in 1983, which rapidly led to my branching out into the other Marvel mutant books of the era (Alpha Flight and the New Mutants). As a young kid myself at the time, I related very much to the New Mutants in particular, enjoying both the early storylines and artwork, as well as the edgier Sienkiewicz-drawn ones that followed soon after. The New Mutants #1 cover is my favorite from the entire series. Though I didn't buy the issue off the newsstand, as it preceded the start of my collecting by 9 months, I bought it as a back issue not long after I started collecting, and the bold purple cover with the full team rushing towards the reader has always remained one of my all-time favorite comic book covers. I had been quietly searching for this one for some time, hoping that I'd have a crack at it if it ever turned up. As fate would have it, I was killing some time before heading to the airport in October 2015 and it just popped up for sale online after being lost in the wilderness for three decades (thanks, Bill)! I'm overjoyed to add this one to my permanent collection - truly a gem of my childhood. Enjoy! A more detailed write-up on the piece can be found here in this Scoop! article from December 4, 2015: Scoop Article on the New Mutants #1 Cover Original Art Social/Sharing |

That is just all kinds of awesome! MAJOR nostalgia for me as well on this one. I'm glad to see the Prof X image came with it, I wasn't sure when I saw the original pic. Congrats Gene - HUGE score my friend!

I don't know what Dan is talking about, but this beats the hell out of buying a planter off a message board! This is the best out-of-the-blue, fall-in-your-lap find since a Frazetta oil owner showed up in a CAF chat! Awesome when there's a good story behind a piece...congrats again, Gene!

Still in shock and awe. Great article. This cover and the cover to the Graphic Novel are my two most nostalgic images from the time. This is what it is all about and I can't congratulate or be more jealous!!! Well done, so well done!!!

Gene: GREAT cover! I actually remember buying this off the stands. But, the best part about it is the story behind it...the memories...the search...and the owning! I remember you telling me that certain pieces "belong" with certain people. That speaks well of this piece and you. Congrats my friend!

Hey man, I didn't know you picked this up :O WOW, that's crazy as I know you were looking as to the whereabouts for quite sometime. I think I remember you standing up for McLeod's stuff like years ago and citing this cove as an example. Sincere congrats, I'm sure its gotten the frame treatment and prominent display at Casa Park. :)

A monumentally historic piece like this should have at least 50 comments, so I am hear to help push it to that. Wow ... yeah, this is definitely an "I can't believe I own this" kind of piece. Major congrats!

An absolutely brilliant treasure, from my second year of reading/collecting comics! If you ever want something even better than this, I have a couple of Harlan Ellison written, Mazzucchelli drawn pages from Daredevil #208 that I know you also remember, even more fondly than you do this piece. If I ever get tired of owning them, I suppose I might be willing to trade down for this piece. I'll let you know! :P

I was "there" the day you got this. I saw it posted and watched you snag it. These serendipitous purchases are so few and far between nowadays. Great score.

Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Wolverine? You really, really do. They should have cast you. Back to the art. Its great.

Such a great cover! Uncanny X-Men #167 was my first exposure to the New Mutants and I hunted down these early issues with great enthusiasm. It's hard to believe that this Fall will mark the 40th anniversary of the title. Definitely feeling old...
On a separate note, it's interesting to read that Scoop article and think about how much has changed in the original art world over the past 7 years.

I don't know how many pieces get double featured (and the current CAF feature highlighting this only shows the first date), but this one is definitely worthy of being featured again. I love the perspective and depth in this one. Super cool cover! Cool story too!

This cover made me buy the book as well, but the original art is SO cool when you see it like this. Even though I love great full page images, pieces like this where you really see the underlying mechanical principles of the medium are so much fun.
Congratulations on owning this gem.
